It is not possible to “lock people up in mental hospitals” any more, and it has t been possible for >50 years.
I’m constantly amazed at how normal people still think this is an option that is simply not being done because of poor policy choices.
In 1955 New Hampshire Hospital had 6000 beds. In 2024 it has 135 beds and the old buildings still stand but are offices for tax collectors and various regulators.
There are a heck of a lot more crazy people now than in 1955. Do the math.

Doing this is a state matter and it is illegal in almost all states. Trump has nothing to do with it. There has never been a Federal mental health detention system.

No, not really.
Western State Hospital in Tacoma is alive and well. My son works there, and my hubby did at one time until he went to work on McNeil Island. And yes, there are truly crazy people there.
