From Wicked and Moana 2 to the record-setting Eras Tour and the pop girlie Grammy sweep, culture for and by women is still fueling the entertainment business
Over the American Thanksgiving weekend, two girl-centric movies about female empowerment – one starring an animated Polynesian teenager and the other a bunch of singing witches – crushed at the box office.
Moana 2, from Walt Disney, had the biggest Thanksgiving Day opening in history. Universal Pictures’ Wicked, which debuted the week prior, set a record for a Broadway-to-screen adaptation. Together, they led the holiday stretch to its best numbers ever. And it was women who drove the results. Moana’s audience was two-thirds female, while Wicked’s opening weekend topped that at 75 per cent. The election might have been won by the manosphere, a collection of “anti-woke” influencers who extol traditional gender norms and hypermasculinity. But the box office results were a reminder that girl culture is still driving large swaths of the economy.
GIRL CULTURE DRIVING THE ECONOMY
And expect demand for it to build during a second Trump administration. Companies should pay attention to a female audience looking for ways to immerse itself in art and entertainment that embraces overtly feminist themes and takes seriously the complexities of being a girl and a woman – precisely because the political sphere will not.

What has happened is that men are removing themselves from society and going their way, as they don’t see a reason to get along in society.
Oh Gawd...
Do they make movies for boys? I am thinking that boys want no singing. They want action and heroism, and not by girls. How about a man with girls as sexually great looking babes that need men to save them.
Ah. Interesting observation. Didn't realize that. BTW, I watched Wicked over Thanksgiving.
No.
“Girl Economy”
“Manosphere”
What sane person even thinks of this crap?
I watch a lot of old movies from the 30s to the 50s. I read a lot of history about our westward expansion from 1840 to 1910. I marvel at what the pioneer families on the Oregon Trail went through to start a new life in the West. I am astonished at what missionary Marcus Whitman did on his missionary travels from Boston to the Walla Walla, WA area and back did. I am amazed at how bold entrepreneurs built railroads all over the west starting right after 100,000 people poured into California in 1850. I can’t believe how strong men built railroad, timber and mining empires in the late 1800s.
But more than any of that amazement, I am grossed out by the demise of our society as witnessed by this article.
A good antidote is Elon Musk and SpaceX.
As far as I can tell most movies and TV shows are aimed at women. I’ve seen the trailers for the two movies mentioned and they seem like prime examples of this. I would care at all to see either.
Two girl or chick flicks make a “girl economy”? Who comes up with this crap?
Yeah, you know, the giant layer of hands that make up the lower exosphere.
Today you need a female action hero, a happy gay guy cast somewhere, of course racial diversity, and the plot of the movie has to hint to some liberal cause like climate change.
Acting sucks
Plot development sucks
Story isn't original
The “sci-fi” isn't realistic
The movies have become like our music, mass produced and formulary junk.
Netflixs and Amazon, 90% of their movies are no better than a soap, an average TV series from years past. And for that you're supposed to pay a subscription fee or pay per view AND be bombarded with endless advertising.
In the absolutely Real World of woke, Homo, Disney movies.
“Do they make movies for boys?”
They did, one was called “Star Wars”. Another was “The Sandlot”. Despite the prevalence of what she thinks is the Manosphere, not anymore.
Sounds about right - relying on fantasy for their imagined “strength “!
The “girl economy”? Those girls’ fathers paid for their tickets …
They’ve ruined male entertainment with gender swapping, race swapping, and of course faggotry.
“Two girl or chick flicks make a “girl economy”? Who comes up with this crap?”
In the meantime, chickification ruined the Star Wars and MCU franchises, ruined “The Rings of Power” show, and the new “Snow White” is unlikely to ever make the theaters. Two movies aren’t going to undo that trend.
