A Conservative former minister has called for first-cousin marriage to be banned in the UK.
Introducing the proposals in Parliament, Richard Holden said the children of first cousins were at greater risk of birth defects and the practice should be prohibited to protect public health.
However, independent MP Iqbal Mohamed argued a ban would be ineffective and said these issues would be better addressed through education programmes to raise awareness of the risks.
Downing Street said the expert advice on the risks of first-cousin marriage was clear but indicated that the government had no plans to change the law.

Hey where did you meet…….

The rate of first cousin related marriages is miscible in the US, even in places where people think it exists where it is like 0.3%. It is rampant in Muslim countries sometimes over 50%.
Ha.
Minuscule not miscible.
THE IS THE WORST PROBLEM IN THE UK THESE DAYS?????
Why didn’t they propose and do this in the ... uh, 14 years they were in government ?
There are a slew of reasons why closely related people should not marry, but birth defects really aren’t one of them.
Unless there is a dna history of undesirable recessives, the risks to their kids is no greater than any two other people.
RE: in Muslim countries sometimes over 50%.
Another case of the US being behind the times of world trends. Muslims have few here to reform us, such as Ilhan Omar. We can be thankful for them. /SARC
Royal Family most effected.
Really the objecting guy is right. Just because they can’t get married it doesn’t necessarily to stop them from hooking up, or breeding. It just means they can’t make it official.
It should be banned, as it does no favors to the gene pool. However, the uncomfortable truth is that, go back 4, 5, 6, 7+ generations, and likely every single person in this thread has ancestors who bred with first cousins.
Is this ‘a thing’ in the UK?
Reading British literature, you see first cousin marriage. Not sure how common it is currently with non-muslim Britons.
