Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst investigated wind and weather patterns to predict the timeline of nuclear fallout, including the paths through which radiation would spread throughout the country.
Experts agree that the Midwest, where 450 ballistic missile silos are stored — particularly Montana, North Dakota and Nebraska — would be the most likely primary target as detonating just two of those storehouses could cause an explosion equal to 100,000 tons of TNT, per Scientific American.
Exposure to radiation poisoning from a nuclear attack would guarantee death for an estimated 300 million Americans within four days of detonation.
Citizens throughout much of Kansas, Iowa, South Dakota, Wyoming and parts of Colorado would suffer death within weeks of exposure to radiation after the silo states get decimated.

Even an absolutely dead center hit on a silo with a missile still in it (ridiculous premise to begin with) would not result in a nuclear event by the warhead on that missile. Yes, the enemy missile would wreak destruction & radiation poisoning but the nuclear material in the silo would not go critical. The US warhead material would likely rupture & add to the general radiation poisoning event.
Even at the immaturity of that map, even with just the strikes on our misdile bases, over 2 thirds of the fresh water sources in the country is contaminated.
About 60 percent of the grain producing areas are contaminated.
How do you store a silo???
I do not know where this model came from other than the same "scientists" who produce global warming models. Back in the day, the canonical model was the Teledyne-Brown model, which delineated by lat-long each round that would land. It was used for planning for a nuclear war.
It looked nothing at all like this. Any more would be classified.

If we had multiple incoming missiles we would launch. The enemy knows this, so instead of targeting empty silos, they would target command and control centers and population centers.
The primary targets would be the US ability to sustain and coordinate a response. They would target Air Force and Naval bases - Edwards, Kirtman, MacDill, SAC, San Diego, Norfolk, Bangor, New London, Diego Garcia...
No one is safe in a nuclear exchange.
The good news? The University of Ma in Amherst would pretty much be evaporated in the event of a nuclear exchange. So, we have that going for us.
I bet they store them above ground too! Ha Ha.
Although our missiles might get away beforehand, as you say, those detonations would most likely be ground bursts.
The worst of all.

The idea was the US launch points were to be as far as possible away from enemy launch points. They want the maximum time possible to respond to an enemy attack. Going father south puts you closer to submarine launched attack

First off we would know the moment they are launched & we would launch right back at them. Chances are that our nukes would be airborne. This map is ridiculous on a number of levels, one being that our nukes would still be grounded in their silos.
If a nuclear war were to break out, there would most likely not be anywhere that is out of harm's way. Those who believe they can survive such an event are dreaming, which is why they are the most dangerous amongst us.
Better to go in a blinding flash of light.
