SOME ORDER
Among the many groups, there are mainly four:
A. HTS al-Jolani: Islamic Jihadists ex Nusra (supported Hamas Oct 7 attacks).
B. Other Islamists - backed by Turkiye.
C. Kurds - allies of US
C. Others, including secular.
Non jihadisrs are mainly under FSA
Haven’t heard the Shia/Suni thing yet.
One thing they all have in common, they hate the Joooooos.
So, Kurds, Secular or Jihadi?
Answer: Yes.
Who cares? None are allies.
The more things change...
From February 2015, almost 10 years ago:
...the Iranians are seeking to develop the area east of the Golan Heights as a springboard for operations against Israel (contrary to the historic practice of the Assad regime, which was to keep that area quiet and apply pressure elsewhere).
The killing of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps general and others on January 18 was a move in the Israeli effort to prevent this...
Bkmrk
Hayat Tahrir al-Sham
Right now even Christians and Alawites are celebrating in massive numbers in their cities. According to the Alawites, only the top 1% of Alawites who had ties to Assad had any protection. The rest were as under surveillance and threat of arrest and torture as everyone else. I’m assuming that’s the case with the Christians since I see them stomping on Assad statutes and dancing around Christmas trees as well.
I have also seen NO reports of any minorities being attacked. One of the main groups, Jihadists, put out an order stating that no minorities or their lands should be harmed, and have told religious leaders in each town that minority rights will be respected and warned anyone who might do otherwise.
Since Turkey is involved, it’s possible they won’t permit Syria to turn into another Afghanistan. But we’ll see.
I DO fear for the Kurds.
Israelis are/were.
Because he wants a bigger role, and to eventually rule like the Ottomans.
Yeah, we are behind this. We install jihadis as leaders.
If Turkey is the instigator, they’re Jihadi.
The Kurds are mostly secular, but very leftist.
More-less communists.
Practically speaking, none of the Syrian fraction is desirable from US point of view.
It will be “choose the lesser evil”.
“Choose the lesser evil”.

Of course.
They are playing it both sides. Just like Qatar does in Israrl vs terrorists.
Good catch
I haven’t seen Alma articke. They are no.1 expert in the region Syria/Lebanon. Thanks
I just saw a tweet from the Washington Post saying the Bishop of Aleppo is urging people not to believe Assadist propaganda about ISIS, and that he gives credit to the people of Syria for being able to live together in peace. There has been no prosecution thus far of minorities.
SDF Kurds and allies are friends of the USA.
In Northern Syria, I have seen estimates of religious beliefs.
It varies in the town they live in. My guess from a few years ago 1/4-1/3 are Christian (Syriac and other), 1/3 atheists, 1/3 Muslim (some secular (in name only) to keep them from harm)
I read that during the years they were fighting ISIS with our support there were 24,000 Christian conversions.
The PKK influence is largely atheists.
The Kurds lost 11,000 soldiers fighting ISIS.
“we are behind this.”
Certainly not all of it. The Kurds, Yes.
Al Qaeda is the label of the force leader.
