I saw Zep in 73 or 74 in the old sombrero stadium in Tampa...for 3 songs. Then it started raining and the band left. Then the riot started. But those 3 tunes were amazing!

that was the ‘77 tour....four days after that riot i saw Zeppelin opening night at Madison Square Garden. Magnificent.

The ‘73 stadium concert in Tampa broke all the records held by the Beatles for a gig by a single band.

I think Beck is the best technical guitarist of the three, but Page is the best musician. His compositions are by far the best (as far as I go, the best in rock music), and as a producer, he knew better than the other two how his guitar sounds fit into the songs created by the band as a whole. Also, neither of the other two managed to sustain a band, let alone one composed of three other such superb musicians.

I didn’t like Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd when I was young, but now I listen to them and zero in on one instrument like the drums with Zep and guitar solos with Floyd.

Then I found Dred Zepplelin. Holy cow what a hoot.
This band does Zep songs with a Jamaican style with an Elvis impersonator as their front man. Saw them live in Houston in the late 80’s.

Led Zeppelin I and Physical Graffiti are both Rock masterpieces.

But they sucked live.

The curse of the band that was so good in the studio, that it simply couldn’t be reproduced live, without adding a bunch of additional musicians.

Jimmy Page was one of the top session players in Britain during the 60s (as was JPJ), so by the time Zep started he was already of master of the studio.

When people see them live, they hear the studio work in their heads, not the actual performance.

Which always sucked.

I saw them live and was sorely disappointed. And it was when John Bonham was alive.

Zeppelin songs took on another dimension live- and it was better than the original vinyl version.

It wasn’t like Queen or many other bands where studio overdubbing of vocals and guitars made it impossible to recreate on stage. Kashmir, Achilles Last Stand, The Song Remains the Same, etc were so much more powerful live on stage than on vinyl- and they were great on vinyl...

Like I said I never saw a LZ concert that didn’t suck until I watched that “Celebration Day” link I posted.

For a couple bucks, can I just watch the first 15 minutes or so when they’re covering the Yardbirds?

It took me a long time to figure out why I just didn’t care much for them. Then realized it was Robert Plant’s vocals. Just not for me.

And that was sort of the blueprint for all the metal/hair bands that followed with the same vocal style. Which I also didn’t care for.

Their success and following can’t be argued with. I’m fine not being a fan.
