Islam has a rather bloody history.

And so does Christianity.

That is blatantly false equivalence.

If you're thinking of the Crusades, there is a huge difference between Islam invading and conquering many lands and the Christian countries who banded together to take them back.

There is a huge moral difference between a man who engages in violence to attack someone unprovoked, and the subject of that attack using violence to defend himself. Immoral people, however, always try to equate the two.

One hundred years ago, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk transformed the Ottoman Empire into the modern, Westernized nation that Erdogan inherited. If only Ataturk was around to respond to this character.

When Erdogan was arrested years ago, he promised to be good from then on and the judge or panel of judges favored his release. A few years later he rose to power, his political party amended the Turkish constitution to remove the return-to-jihad features, and he purged the military, judiciary, and suppressed his political opponents.

As easy as it is to dislike him (and I do), he's better than whomever and whatever will follow, even assuming Turkey doesn't disintegrate in A) a civil war or B) overthrow and occupation by some outside power.

When it becomes immaterial whether Turkey descends into chaos, buh-bye to Erdogan.
