Detectives investigating the murder of UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson reportedly found shell casings with the words 'deny', 'defend' and 'depose' inscribed on them.
Police sources told ABC News that casings were found at the scene with the cryptic messages left on them.
Detectives are now working to determine what the words mean and if they could possibly hint at a motive for the slaying of the 50-year-old.
Officers are still searching for the unknown assailant who gunned down Thompson outside of the Hilton Hotel in Manhattan on Wednesday morning.
Authorities say he fled the scene on foot before then making a getaway on an electric bike into nearby Central Park.
Surveillance footage of the shooting shows Thompson walking alone outside of the entrance to the midtown hotel when the gunman steps into frame and opens fire.
The masked killer draws out a large gun fitted with a silencer and shots him in the back, sending the CEO stumbling down the street.
Several bystanders were seen in the footage witnessing the horror shooting, with one woman standing mere feet away from the gunman when he opened fire.

The shooter grasped the top of the handgun with the heel of his hand and four fingers to rack the slide, common with a handgun that has a floating barrel and a slide.
The Ruger Mark I-IV series all have a fixed barrel attached to the fixed Receiver. The Bolt moves within the fixed Receiver. Since only the two tabs on the rear of the Bolt are exposed, to cycle the Bolt, one would grasp the two tabs from the rear of the Receiver with the thumb and side of the pointer finger.
On one of the Fox shows tonight, Alan Dershowitz was on. He was supposed to be commenting on the Daniel Penny jury deliberations, but he said he first wanted to comment on this case. I was only half listening, but he said United Healthcare was under investigation for insider trading and he suspected the shooting might have to do with silencing or threatening others about potential testimony.

No, it was a silencer equipped large pistol, and had a slide lock device on it. Made it much more quiet by keeping gasses from escaping the ejection port. It’s the ultimate in quiet. But it requires you to run the action manually after each shot.
Most people running silencers don’t need or use them.
I’ll go with what someone posted earlier

If there had been even the remotest chance of a bystander intervening and stopping the killer, the Daniel Penny case would put the kibosh on that.

Too bad this is New York and not Texas.

I would have expected the casings to say “That’s not covered”.
I think I solved the murder. It’s Colonel Mustard in the Plum Room.
That’s the ebonics version...
I always think of this story when these shootings come up.
Tommy Sotomayor had a field day about it.
They heard the shooting at the church so “Pa and Ruth got their guns and went after the gunman”
That is the only names I have for the heroes of this story “Pa and Ruth”

That’s strange as on Jesse Water’s show he had John Walsh from America’s Most Wanted on and he was there to comment on the CEO shooting, but he took the entire segment to comment about the Daniel Penny case.
He did mention the shooter wasn’t likely to be a professional hitman at the end of the segment. He made too many mistakes..
Sounds like some antifa type crap, it wasn’t a hitman then, this guy did it himself.
My money’s on some trans didn’t get coverage for a mutilation.
