UnitedHealthcare Group's stock has risen in the hours following the fatal shooting of a top executive - which happened hours before the company's earnings announcement.
Brian Thompson, CEO of the UnitedHealth insurance arm, was shot outside a Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan around 6.45am on Wednesday morning.
The 50-year-old was taken to a local hospital in critical condition but died shortly afterwards.
UnitedHealthcare, America's largest health insurance provider, was due to hold its Investor Day in the city, but it has since been cancelled.
Its stock was up by as much as 2.5 per cent his morning - and up 1.4 percent at 12.30pm ET.
The company had already released its guidance for 2025 ahead of closing down today's shareholder meeting due to Thompson’s death.
Sales are expected to be more than $450 billion, which is ahead of the $431 billion that had been expected.
It is thought the better than expected earnings projection for next year sent the stock green.
'We are deeply saddened and shocked at the passing of our dear friend and colleague Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare,' the company said in a statement.

This is a bizarre twist to the CEO’s murder.
What is going on with people?
Right!
It was an ordered hit..maybe someone didnt get the coverage they wanted for their family member and wanted revenge?? My Mom has UnitedHealthcare only for her medication, for health care she says UnitedHealthcare well stinks
If this keeps up more CEOs might need healthcare................
UnitedHealth is up 0.63% (on the NASDAQ) as of this post. The NASDAQ is up 0.93%. On the surface, I don’t see any oddities.
Very professional hit. It looks like the shooter had a baretta fs92 with a handmade suppressor that had trouble cycling shots. He hit the target in the heart from the back first shot as the target tumbles immediately, probably from massive cardiopulmonary damage. He shoots 3-4 more times, confirms his shot locations on the targets back to confirm the kill, and then runs off to an alley (which he probably knows has no cameras).
Probably throws away the hoodie and blends into public transportation.
A professional hit. I’ve heard big medical insurers providers are sending security teams to high ups now.
Killer was calm

Which a-hole said "don't phrase it as murder, too harsh...say 'passing'..."?
“This is a bizarre twist to the CEO’s murder.”
Not really. The stock was down after the murder but the later up on the earnings report.
Honestly I’ve never seen anything like this.
Some transitioner was chattering about it on the web. Didn’t get his new titties approved by insurance
Many read the threat. Notified the feds.
FBI had him on their radar. He’s a left nut wing.
Lied on his gun application.
It’s Trump’s rhetoric to blame
What did I leave out?
And downright cold.
Not much...SOP
“Probably throws away the hoodie and blends into public transportation.”
He rode away on a city bike.
Yes I watched that video.
He was calm and he made sure the dude was dead. After shooting once he went in and shot several more times just for good measure. This was a man with a serious grudge and nothing to lose.
We were binge watching Persons of Interest, til they changed it to pay per view. That’s exactly how trained killers behaved on the show. Art imitating life? Or life imitating art?

legit? I report; you decide.
Yeah, they might try to drop a line like “a disgruntled customer...” or some crap but that guy had killed others before and I’m pretty sure it might be a new friend from south of the border. It looked pro, but a real pro would do it in a bathroom or some other place he could get it without being on video.
