Russian minister Anna Tsivileva lets slip 50,000 soldiers ‘MIA’ in Ukraine

Up to 50,000 Russian soldiers could be missing in action in Ukraine, a senior defence official who is related to President Putin has revealed in an apparent slip-up.

Anna Tsivileva, a deputy defence minister, told a parliamentary roundtable that there had been tens of thousands of requests for DNA testing to identify the remains of servicemen.

“We accept the DNA of relatives, as I have said, free of charge,” Tsivileva said. “[There are] 48,000 relatives who have applied to us.”

However, Andrei Kartapolov, the head of the parliamentary defence committee, stressed that the figures cited by Tsivileva were classified and said they should not be made public.

“I kindly ask you not to mention these numbers anywhere. This is classified information and quite sensitive. And when we draw up the final documents, these numbers should not appear anywhere,” he said.

Not a large butcher’s bill for 2 1/2 years of industrial trench warfare fighting against an alliance with 800 million citizens.

Probably old news - the number might be much higher by now:

About 51,000 Ukrainians Have Deserted Armed Forces This Year

“800 million?”

330 million from America, 500 million from NATO, and 20 million from the Ukraine. I should’ve said 850 million.

That’s not the butchers bill, that’s just the deserters.

48000 relatives is not necessarily 50000 missing soldiers. There could be 4 or 5 relatives for any given missing soldier. It’s foolish to think that there is a one to one correspondence between the two values.

It is also worth mentioning that Russia is way bigger than Ukraine way more populated and therefore has more people to become soldiers. The Soviet Union was famous for stationing its troops far away from their homes. I suspect many of the missing soldiers went back to their homes without telling anyone. So don’t get your hopes up that Russia is suffering a huge loss of troops in combat. If attrition is the name of the game then Russia is going to win.

You should have said 900000000 because of 50 million illegal immigrant undocumented citizens in America.

“That’s not the butchers bill, that’s just the deserters.”

I doubt it. AWOL or absent without leave is the term use for desserts. MIA means missing in action – likely dead but the body has not been recovered.

This is industrial trench warfare where people get blown to nothing or buried under the walls of collapsing trenches. The Suropeans are still digging the bodies of missing WW1 soldiers out of Flanders Fields in Europe.

I wonder if that number includes non-Russian soldiers like Mercenaries, soldiers from other nations, Wagner group, Russian Navy, merchant marines, ect..

While it’s early, the US had 76K at the end of WWII with 400K dead in the field (obviously no DNA testing). You have to figure that statement suggests about 750k dead, not counting other groups not listed. They could easily be 1.5-2.0 million down since the start of the war including all groups. That’s probably nothing to Russia, given their history, but seems like much for 2-3 years of war and one side.

You remind me of Comical Ali, the Iraqi information minister who was on TV denying vociferously that coalition forces were in Baghdad while coalition tanks were moving about in the background.

50,000 MIA after 2 1/2 years of industrial trench warfare is nothing. Especially when the war is close to home and troops can melt away. How many US troops could dessert in Vietnam? The answer is nearly zero. Where would they go?
