SAVANNAH: SHERMAN APPROACHING THE CITY; Capture of Millen, the Prisoners’ Depot (12/4/1864)

PHILADELPHIA, Saturday, Dec. 3.

The following is a special dispatch to the Evening Telegraph:

WASHINGTON, Saturday, Dec. 3 -- P.M.

The Government has received information that Gen. SHERMAN had captured Millen, on the Georgia Central Railroad, on the 29th ult. His army was concentrated, and it is thought has moved to Savannah before this.

By the arrival of the steamship Fulton, we have intelligence from Port Royal to the 30th ult. We learn that the publication of newspapers at that place has been, for the present, prohibited, and that all citizens had been enrolled, and are now used for the protection of the place, as a movement of some unknown character had taken place, and the troops ordered away. An expedition had sailed from Port Royal previously, but no information could be gained relative to either of the above movements from the officers of the Fulton, as they were prohibited from making it public.

NEWS FROM REBEL SOURCES.

CAPTURE OF MILLEN BY GEN. SHERMAN.

From the Richmond Enquirer, Dec. 1.

We believe it true that SHERMAN'S army has reached Millen, and separated into two columns, one moving toward Savannah River, and another turning back toward Augusta. The latter column and movement is without doubt intended as a feint to protect his rear from attack.

It is too late to menace Augusta, and SHERMAN's main body is too far South.

He will do one of two things -- either go straight to Beaufort and to Savannah to attack Charleston by land, or he will join GRANT in an attack against Richmond.

He has met with very little resistance in his march through Georgia.

Good old NY Slimes— nothing about Gen. Joe Wheeler and certainly NOTHING about Gen. Jefferson Davis’s abandonment of slaves following them at/on Ebenezer Creek. Or the actual story of General Iverson, CSA and the capture of 375 union cavalry as well as General Stoneman, taken prisoner with Joe Wheeler’s help- no resistance, right!

Let’s see if they cover Ebenezer Creek.
