This year marks the 40th anniversary of the iconic Cold War thriller "Red Dawn," a film by a Hollywood conservative that showcased patriotism, a love for the American military and warned of the dangers of gun control. Yet, it also taught the man behind the movie a deep lesson about the mentality of liberal Hollywood.

Amanda Milius, the daughter of the film’s director, spoke to Fox News Digital about the film’s 40th anniversary, its legacy, and what the movie revealed to her dad. Released in 1984, "Red Dawn" told the story of the Soviet Union invading America and fighting a conventional land battle within the USA. It starred some of the most popular actors of the day and has gone on to be regarded as a cultural touchstone of the Cold War era.

I guess you missed the part that talked about the Soviet invasion thru Alaska stalled out in Colorado, Denver was under siege. Did you miss that part?

"The film depicts a fictional World War III centering on a military invasion of the United States by an alliance of Soviet, Warsaw Pact, and Communist Latin American states."

It was so bad I don’t recall much about it other than it was a complete waste of my time.

That’s right: There were Soviet advisors and a few boots; but the invasion was by Cubans.

Russia is the main invasion force, with Cuban and central American auxiliary units. It’s explained in the film by Col Tanner, and he also detailed the nuclear exchange by the Soviets.

It was the Soviet Union, Warsaw pact and their Latin Allies, remember the Russian/Soviet paratroops and the Spetsnaz?.

“In the town of Calumet, Colorado, a high school class is interrupted by a Soviet-led invasion. Some students, including brothers Jed and Matt Eckert, escape the chaos as Soviet paratroopers attack. Combined Soviet, Cuban and Nicaraguan soldiers then occupy Calumet.”

Wrong. Even the paratroopers in the opening scene are Russian. Cuba is only auxiliary to the invasion, it’s actually made clear multiple times.

That little town saw a lot of Cubans but it wasn’t Cuba that invaded and conquered so much of America in the movie.

Did you miss that part?

Nope. The main protagonists were Cuba and Nicaragua.
Russia was simply ancillary to the main plot line.

The central American forces/soldiers were the REMF forces needed to occupy key rear areas freeing up the Red Army to fight on the “stalled” front. In fact, the town that the story takes place was a key rail/ammo storage facility occupied by Nicaraguan and Soviet special forces.

When I read that riposte to Hogg, I had to completely embrace that truth fully in a non-biblical sense.

I say that because I am currently on my journey, finding my way to God late in my life, and even still, I abhor hearing Leftists say “What would Jesus do?”

I don’t feel at all qualified to predict what Jesus would do, but I sure know that America, founded on biblical Christian precepts, fully embraces owning a weapon to protect yourself from a tyrannical government.

The movie was filmed in and around Las Vegas, New Mexico, which is not far from Santa Fe.

I watched it about 13 years ago, after having lived in NM. I thought the scenery sure looked like New Mexico. Watched the “making of...” short on the DVD, and sure enough, it was!

The Russian paratroopers commander was fluent in Russian. He was a crew on 1950s USAF Spy planes who specialized in listening to Russian directors for responding fighters and other radio traffic.
Good film that aged well.
If you’re ever in Las Vegas New Mexico, that’s where it was filmed. Things are still there to see. Even the big sign on the building, welcome to Calumet City!

Yet the movie plot circulated around the Cubans, not the Russians, making the Cubans the main protagonists.

Interesting that the SAME HOLLYWOOD who loved the Soviets (and thus hated the move) now DESPISES the Russians.

What changed? Perhaps the Soviets were Communists and the Russians are not? Or maybe the Russians protect their children from Grooming and make sure that queers leave their kids alone? Or maybe that Russians don’t hate conservative government, unlike Leftists?

You sure got that wrong, it was a Soviet led invasion of America.
