A lot of Navy units are crowding into the Western Pacific, and they don’t necessarily like each other. My ship didn’t have to be concerned until we got into Vietnam.

If a war broke out and China and/or Russia combined closed the Malaca Strait, Panama Canal and the Suez Canal, it would bring the world economy to its knees in a hurry.

Don't make the mistake of thinking the Russian or Chinese navies are even remotely peer or near-peer to the US Navy. If war broke out, the Russian and Chinese navies would be on the bottom before they found out about it.

I’m not, it would take very little to take out the Panama Canal, the Houthis have effectively shut down the Suez Canal, even if they could close down the Malaca Strait, they could make it very difficult for commercial shipping even without a great navy and tie up US Naval forces that might be needed elsewhere.

Once upon a time, and I won’t say where, the US military tracked every soviet ship, on the waves and below it. I imagine that even withg the improvements in submarines the US still does so.

It is not the Russian or Chinese Navy that are the problem.

It is the missiles—wherever they come from....

We’ll know it has started when the satellites all go dark.

Unfortunately, a lot of folks seem to be unaware of that...

That would hurt China far more than the West.

China’s reliance on Middle Eastern oil is increasing.

China is the world’s largest oil importer, purchasing over 70 percent of its supply from abroad, having surpassed the U.S. for this title in 2017. And around half of this oil comes from the Middle East, around 47 percent in 2020, at a value of $176 billion.

Saudi Arabia was the main supplier of this oil, providing around 15.9 percent of its total crude imports in 2020, at a cost of around $28.1 billion. Iraq, Oman, Kuwait, and the UAE are among China’s other Middle Eastern suppliers. China has also been circumventing sanctions on Iran to import crude from the oil-rich country.

There are no large-scale pipelines between the major Russian Siberian oil fields to China, but several are being planned.

Closing the Straits of Molucca would cripple China. I believe it is part of the USA strategy to do so if a full-scale war develops with China.

What missiles? Going where? How are they targeting them? How are they shooting enough of them to get through missile defenses?

My favorite time on the bridge was the 4 to 8 watch. The bridge would be black except for the red light over the quartermaster station and the dim white light inside the gyrocompass repeaters. In a couple hours though there would slowly emerge a separation between sky and sea. I could look forward to being relieved and going down to the main deck for breakfast in the wardroom.
