A man in Montgomery County is facing charges for allegedly ramming into a stranger's car and then shooting at him, according to investigators.
The incident happened just before noon on Sunday at the intersection of Hardin Store Road and Trailwood Estates Drive.
According to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, they first got reports that 53-year-old John Dyer was shooting at cars in the area.
It wasn't until after deputies started speaking to witnesses that they realized Dyer had nearly shot a person.
The victim said he was on the phone with his brother when Dyer rear-ended him, not once, but three times.
"The next thing I knew, he started shooting at me, and my back window exploded. I am still on the phone with my brother, and I am saying, 'He is shooting at me. He's shooting at me," said the victim, who asked us to conceal his identity.
The victim said Dyer then attempted to drive beside him, but he swerved, causing Dyer to lose control.
He said that's when the shooting stopped. The victim was able to pull over into an Exxon, where he checked his body for bullet wounds.
"One of them went through the windshield where my head would have been if I hadn't ducked down. One of them went into my back seat where my right shoulder would be, and my tailgate is full of bullet holes," the victim said.
The sheriff's office indicated the motivation was road rage, but the victim said it was completely random and unprovoked.
"This dude tried to execute me on the road. This wasn't road rage," the victim said.
The victim said he counted roughly 11 bullet holes in his truck.
Dyer was reportedly injured from the crash, according to witnesses, but was later arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
He was transported to the Montgomery County Jail, where he is currently being held on a $50,000 bond.
Catatonia ping
Aggravated assault and attempted murder are both serious criminal charges, but they differ primarily in intent. Aggravated assault involves attempting to cause serious bodily injury to another person, while attempted murder requires a specific intent to kill the victim, along with taking substantial steps toward that goal.Maybe a twelfth bullet hole in his car would have stepped it up to attempted murder.
$10 says he gets probation if it is Maryland.
The byline says Texas. Likely not to get “shock probation” there.
Gang initiation?
getting the impression the mad max movies were instructional videos...
Paranoid people jump to the conclusion that whatever you just did was aimed at them. You may not have even noticed them. Suddenly, they’re acting like some cinematic road rage scene. In one case outside Tampa a man jumped in his car to chase someone he thought had “dissed him.” He got on I-75 and started harassing a guy who had no idea what was going on. He killed that man while the man was on the phone with 911.
The way to handle road rage, if that was what this was, is to disengage immediately. Take the next off ramp. Pull off the road and let them go. If all of that fails, my fallback is a 9mm carry piece. But I’ll do backflips to avoid using it. (I’m 70 and just the idea of a backflip gives me chills.)
I’d guess that the victim was on the phone slowed down and opened up a five car gap between himself and the car in front of him so he could talk on the phone and not have to pay attention to his driving. I see this all the time on the Long Island expressway. It drives a lot of people absolutely nuts.
Texas.
I used to be a 5 over (or more) guy. Now, retired, I’m a 5 under guy lol
No I don't.
Hardin Store Road is a 2 lane country road, in an area where farms are being turned into suburbia.
What state??
Tehas.
I’ve got a Glock 19 with a regular 15 rd. mag. PLUS a back mag that holds over 30. First shot at me gets a mag dump back.
More like a meth head, from the looks of the guy, in vid at link.
Or, drunk.
“First shot at me gets a mag dump back.”
My fear is that a poorly aimed shot will kill or injure an innocent person. This car-to-car thing with both moving is asking for collateral damage. Somebody shoots at me, I’ll go for cover. If I have to, I’ll line up one shot. If I need a second, okay. But a mag dump is going to look very bad to a jury, either criminal or civil. (I fired over a thousand rounds before I carried for real just to be certain I could reliably put a round where I needed it to go.)
Most police reactions when shot at by perpetrators are mag dumps.
