Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

Hopefully that went well. Getting the youth up is not an enviable task.

It was the in-laws’ shredder. We’re not risking burning out our own. I don’t think it’s all that great. I am being very careful.

Well, if we burn this one out I’m going to suggest the estate just pay Staples to shred the rest. It’s holding out OK so far.

Good morning. Happy Humph Day!

It’ sort-of like a Friday Eve since Friday is Independence Day.

B-I-L’s plane was late. Then it took a long time for the luggage to get to the carousel. I don’t know whether their transfer cart broke down or they were carrying the luggage by hand, but by the time I got in bed it was 2:45 am. It’s going to be a looooong day.

And B-I-L is sick again.

Hopefully the appraisal will go well and it will all have been worthwhile.

I haven’t solved the Wordle yet. I’ve made 2 guesses and I can’t come up with any English words for guess #3. I’ll post it when I get it.

I have a question for my FRiends. I need to ask you because I can’t ask anyone who knows Mrs. ArGee. You’ll understand why in a minute.

When she was in college, she was sexually accosted by a professor. She was encouraged to make a formal complaint. After going through the process, the professor was acquitted. It caused Mrs. ArGee to leave the school before getting her degree due to the emotional trauma.

She still suffers somewhat from the unresolved trauma.

Now to the question. I discovered what looks like an official transcript of a hearing or trial or whatever there was in the estate papers - almost 250 pages worth. I want to just shred it and not tell Mrs. ArGee. I’m sure if she knows it’s there she’ll at least want to read it, which will cause a great deal of pain. And it seems like that would be OK because she doesn’t know it exists so she wouldn’t know it was gone.

On the other hand, it’s not mine. She’s the executor so she’s officially the one who makes decisions.

If I ask young ArGee or B-I-L and they decide I should shred it, they’ve been burdened with a secret they can never tell. I don’t want to do that to them, which is why I’m asking you all.

Thoughts? It seems a no-brainer that the document gets shredded for Mrs. ArGee’s good. But it is a bit of an overstep.

Any way she might get closure from reading this? If so, she deserves that chance.

Also, what would be her reaction if somehow she found out later that you withheld this? “By omission” doesn't go over well with some folks.

Quandary... I wish you the best of luck and as always... “thoughts and prayer”...

One option is that you could store it away without mentioning it... maybe at some point in time, down the road, it may be useful to her in some way... 🤷🏽‍♂️

Good Midweek Morning!

Seems that I used the same greeting only a week ago... 🤔

Too bad that BIL is under the weather again... must make travel a real bear...

Took quite a while but I don’t think that there were any other options at that point...

I’m not sure she would get closure.

I’m sure if she ever found out it would not be a fun conversation.

She still suffers somewhat from the unresolved trauma.

If nothing changes, nothing changes.

I’m sure if she knows it’s there she’ll at least want to read it, which will cause a great deal of pain.

She knows it's there. She'll wonder what happened to it. That means she'll suspect you, young ArGee and/or B-I-L deliberately hid it from her.

Will her reading it cause a great deal of pain? Probably, but it could also give her some closure and comfort to know, rather than constantly not knowing who knows, what do they know, and being stuck in the mental rut of mulling over the past events that traumatized her.

Consider:

• Let her know the official transcript was discovered in the estate.
• Young ArGee and B-I-L read just enough to know what they'd found.
• Young ArGee and B-I-L stopped reading at that point in respect of her privacy.
• You are all reluctant to destroy it, but think that might be the right course of action.
• BUT you are concerned that sneakily shredding it would merely add a layer of hidden deceit to the family dynamics.
• There is also the fact that it is her document, her history, and her trauma.

Only she has the right, the knowledge, and the trauma to make the decision of either destroying it or going through the possible anguish of reading it and ultimately deriving any closure or comfort she can from understanding the process as it happened back then.

Good luck. It's going to be difficult, but better than creating a family secret.

If it was me, I’d be happy not to know it was every there. At least, I think so.
