A suspect search in San Joaquin County nearly ended in tragedy early Thursday morning when a vigilante allegedly shot at deputies.
The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office says, just before 1:30 a.m., deputies showed up at the Pick-N-Pull along Clark Drive in Stockton to investigate an alarm. Three suspects were seen running from the property, deputies say.
Two deputies chased after the suspects, following them along the nearby canal. The deputies eventually took cover behind a cement fence separating a Buddhist temple from a home in the area.
At the same time, the sheriff's office says a homeowner got an alert from his front door security camera. The homeowner appears to have called his grandson for help instead of calling law enforcement.
Armed with an AR-15, the homeowner's grandson got in a golf cart and also started searching the area.
The grandson soon ran into the deputies at the temple property – but apparently didn't know they were law enforcement officers. Before they could announce their presence, the sheriff's office says the grandson racked a round and fired two shots at the deputies.
Both deputies restrained from returning fire and instead took cover. They then issued commands at the grandson, who reportedly complied without further incident and was taken into custody. His name has not been released.
"This incident underscores the vital importance of allowing trained law enforcement to handle dangerous situations. Taking the law into your own hands can escalate conflicts and lead to tragic outcomes," the sheriff's office said in a statement.
Highlighting how close the deputies came to harm, the sheriff's office says one shot had struck the cement wall just below where the deputies were looking over.
No description has been released of the suspects that the deputies were originally searching for.
That’s sort of ironically funny. I’ve been to that place a number of times. What Stockton is now becoming the Detroit of San Joaquin Valley
[got in a golf cart]
Yeah, a golf cart will provide excellent cover.
Oh, and when carrying an AR-15, you might want to pull that charging handle BEFORE making contact with a suspect.
Stockton is the arm pit of calufornia
Vigilante is an awfully weird way to spell citizen.
Just a funny story and I’ll keep it short. There was a drug house in my patio home neighborhood. I wrote a letter to the chief of police. One morning when I went to work (still dark) a blacked out SUV was parked on the street; very, very suspicious. I told my wife to call the police and she watched as the police conducted a full felony stop on the SUV. The SUV was occupied by two undercover police who were watching the house I had complained about. Oops.
Stockton is the Detroit of Califonia and a major hub for illegals immigrants, there aplace call the Stockton II, it use to be nice but parking lot full of large white buses, vans, etc, I have seen hundreds of young men from south of the bodfer depart these vehicles, no women or chidren among them.
I meant Stockton INN.
Wait...did he or did he not shoot the deputy, and what about the sheriff, did he shoot the sheriff??
He shot the sheriff.
But he did not shoot the deputy.
I live in a very quiet, nice community (that is rapidly being overrun by apartment complexes that are changing the nature of my town).
I'm on a quiet dead-end street, but I noticed all manner of traffic traveling up and down the street at very peculiar hours. Having had a long experience as an addict, (although recovered for well over 13 years) I correctly identified a particular house at the end of this dead-end as a possible 'drug trap'.
Well wouldn't you know it. About 3-6 months after I noticed, I saw a local township police van, with full markings, parked outside the house on the street for about 48 hours.
And a further shocker: Those renters left the property in about a month. I saw the U-haul vans.
Message sent; message received.
Is there a military armored golf cart?
Do they have more meth in Stockton or Modesto?
Even in a small town, they should have something, especially since it is smaller.
You’d think now they could use AI to identify trap houses, brothels, ID thieves, etc.
But he did not shoot the deputy.
Thank you for clearing that up.
He shot at the first people he saw?
....AND he missed?!?!
He should be thankful they did not kill him.
I can only imagine what people would be saying about the cops if they had.
i am guessing it would be a tie
