A dog has been rescued after it fell down an abandoned mine shaft in Northern California.
Garden Valley Fire Protection District says, early in the morning on Nov. 21, first responders were called to an old abandoned mine in El Dorado County after getting reports that a dog was trapped 50 feet down.
With the help of Cal Fire's Amador-El Dorado Unit, a firefighter was lowered down into the mine.
The dog was then secured and raised out.
Rescuers made sure to shower the dog with pets and good vibes after all four paws were back safely above ground.
Exactly how the dog fell down the mine shaft is unclear, but authorities say the incident is a reminder of the danger of these abandoned structures. Garden Valley Fire officials say there are 5,416 mining claims and 1,968 mines in El Dorado County alone.
Excellent feel good story. Thanks.

Glad they got the doggie out and he was okay. I know a guy who bought some land there with an old mine on it. He did come up with some gold out of it too, but died not long after at 55 from a heart attack.
1. Real heroes!
2. Bless the dog.
3. Plug up all those holes Newsome you filth instead of your global warming rubbish.
4. Who was the filth who let their dog run loose?
Good job!
I don’t think I could make it as a firefighter, going down mines or climbing ladders.
I wonder if fire departments have “land guys.”
Claustrophobe here. I start feeling anxious and uncomfortable in the middle of a Nebraska prairie.
Part of our entrance test is to climb up to the top of the 100’ truck ladder and raise both hands simultaneously. So no, we don’t have that unless you are an office person.
Most people don’t know that firefighters have to be very physically fit and willing to risk their lives.
My brother is a fireman/EMT. His training and his time in service was intense.
I still have flashbacks to the eighty foot tower to the “slide for life” at Ft Benning. Was hanging on for dear life. The slide into the water wasn’t all that bad.
Watched the Airborne soldiers preparing for their first jump. No thanks, but good on them!
Fire fighters get credit for training hours too.
Like swift water rescue of dogs, you see people complaining about it being as waste of manhours, but the reality is they get real life training.
The entire Sierra NEVADA range is riddled with mine shafts. MOST have NO fences around them.
Of course they do. Don’t you remember, the kerfluffle when they had to lower the standards for female firefighters? I think firefighters, to be approved, have to carry two heavy bags up a ladder.
And I’m sure most of them are not on any maps or listing.
Pupster was probably nose to the ground chasing a Wabbit and at the last second Bug's sidestepped the hole and sat back and watched. BTW-The Dogs name is Elmer Phudd.
feelgood story of the day...
I for repelled into mines for the fun of it.
Getting paid to do would have been icy on the cake.
