Ryan Kobayashi, father of a 31-year-old Maui woman who vanished in Los Angeles nearly two weeks ago, was found dead near LAX early Sunday morning, officials confirmed.
Ryan and other family members traveled to Los Angeles to search for his daughter, Hannah Kobayashi, who disappeared shortly after missing a connecting flight at LAX.
On Monday, Nov. 18, Ryan spoke with KTLA in hopes of reaching his daughter. “I miss her,” he said. “Just want her to know that, and just want her to reach out – anything.”
Hannah’s family has not heard from her since Nov. 10, and her last known location was in downtown Los Angeles near the Pico Metro Station on Nov. 11.
On Sunday, Nov. 24, Los Angeles Police said officers responded to the 6100 block of Century Boulevard around 4 a.m. Sunday for a report of a death in the area.
While LAPD did not release any details about the cause of death, a nonprofit that is believed to be aiding in the search provided a statement on behalf of the family.
“The Kobayashi family endured a devastating tragedy today,” wrote the RAD Movement. “After tirelessly searching throughout Los Angeles for 13 days, Hannah’s father, Ryan Kobayashi, tragically took his own life. This loss has compounded the family’s suffering immeasurably.”

Well that is extremely disturbing
How awful! His poor family. Why would he put them through that?
One gets to know people after 25 years on the same board.
I know or am quite sure that you are a very strong person and giving in or giving up would not be an option.
I’m a little unstable sometimes in case none have noticed :)
I don’t know how I would act in the face of devastation.
And the daughter is likely gone forever...he should have toughed it out.
But not everyone is built the same.
So sad all around
Maybe he has a role in his daughters death or her missing. Like I mentioned previously, I don’t think she ever left Hawaii. I think someone else was using her phone in LA
I would think that there would be plenty of proof available as to whether or not she made flight to LA. There must be tons of video surveillance.
There’s something very strange about the whole story.
He has a Japanese name.
This was an answer on Quora when I searched to see if seppuku still happens.
In 2001, Isao Inokuma - Wikipedia, who was a judo gold medalist of Tokyo olympic committed seppuku when his construction company was about to file for bankruptcy.A Los Angeles TV station said Kobayashi died after he jumped off from a parking structure near LAX sometime around 4 a.m. on Sunday, police confirmed. Also in 1999, Japanese Worker Kills Himself Near Company President's Office as a protest against company’s restructuring. When the current emperor dies, it is probable that few from ultra right wing group will do the deeds as well.
It will happen whether Japan is traditional or not. The point of seppuku is that it is one of the most agonising way to commit suicide.
So this is the only option for someone who feel compelled to exit but can’t take “coward” way of jumping, slitting wrist, pill or hanging.
It would be as rare as someone committing self immolation. But, it won’t die out because it has a point.
Runaway, unstable woman, possibly on drugs, has psychotic break, goes to l.a. where she is abused by local scum bags....Father doesn’t sound like a well grounded person either but her, cryptic messages, seem paranoid
...can understand the grief, but father killing himself doesn’t sound right. One can’t help daughter if dead...maybe he discovered her and she or her captures killed him.
My guess:
..psychotic daughter runs away, sketchy Dad kills himself due to grief...daughter at large hiding in plain site on streets or shelter..
IMHO only
..
this whole story is crazy.
Certainly very odd circumstances.
And, sad.
Maybe he was suicided.
If he was of Japanese blood he very possibly felt responsible for his daughter’s plight and did what the Japanese are sometimes known to do in such a situation.
That very last sentence is as grim as it gets. Is that what happened? Another layer of mystery and unanswerable questions has now been added
I think he was killed. Father doesn’t stop looking for his daughter.
That’s possible. The whole situation had a hinky aspect to it.
It would’ve been easier to pull off decades ago when flight restrictions weren’t so tight. Now, a person pretty much has to be connected to a ticket, etc.
I guess I just think Dad couldn’t endure the pain any mor, and what he thought he had to do to stop it.
The whole situation is tragic on many levels.
As liberals will do, he cheated.
Or not, right? We’ve seen no video of her in LA. The only evidence, as I’ve heard, is her phone was pinging from there and messages from her phone said she was there. Could easily have been someone else posing as her
