'People Lose A Little Bit Of Weight'

How do I know that your body knows how to resolve this problem conclusively in each and every instance? Because every single animal on the planet does precisely that. They neither become wildly obese nor, except in the absence of available food, rail-thin and starve to death. They eat enough calories to maintain their weight within a reasonable range on an autonomous basis without conscious thought and every single animal does this, without exception, until and unless they get into human-processed foodstuffs. All of them do and always have. Further, the amount of seed oil any animal can consume without human intervention is in fact a statistical zero because they only exist in any sort of concentrated form due to human processing and thus no animal, of any species, ever consumed any material amount of them naturally.

Many studies show the opposite, too!

Again, you go right ahead! I support your decision to zap all of your food.

What people miss about the GLP-1 drugs is the absolute necessity of using those months to radically change your diet. Just eating less of the same crap isn’t going to help you.

You need to change portions and content. Otherwise, you are not fixing the problem.

There are a lot of people who are on these drugs without the cooperation of their MDs.

As to the basic statement that animals automatically keep weight “correct”, total horse pucky. Get off yer butt (fat or otherwise) and go observe.

Predators gorge themselves right after a kill. Then, lay about until they digest. And, then they go out to hunt again. Can they hunt with their bellies dragging? ‘Ell no.
Same with herbivores. They gorge themselves. But, but, if too fat they get culled by the predators.

There is no naturally “healthy” system working here, except “eat or be eaten”.

Humans and their companions/food animals have the ability to insulate themselves from this cycle. There is nothing intrinsic going on.
It is simply eating too much. Close yer pie hole for a bit and your weight will come down. Don’t and you waddle about. There is no intrinsically healthy food. It is calories.

I suspect prescription drugs play a major role in obesity.

Wild animals don’t become obese because they can’t. There’s almost never enough food available, and if there is the situation “self corrects” by them either being too slow to get away from predators or too slow to be predators. We know when we put them in captivity that we have to strictly govern their available food or they will indeed become obese.

The fact is animals (which includes us) are wired to eat everything that’s available, because there might not be anything later. Getting into civilized life where there’s food available whenever creates “problems”. We have to overcome those instincts.

And there were definitely fat people in the 60s.

In the 60's we didn't have Imitation, Fake or Pre Processed crap and almost NOBODY was FAT.

Yeah, you did.

Cool-whip, Crisco, Pop Tarts, Pringles, Quisp, Tang not to mention those food stick things.

And that is just off the top of my head.

Should we eat better? Of course. But do not make the past into some sort of fairy land.

“ For much of my life, I forced down a breakfast not long after getting up because I was always told, “you can’t skip breakfast”.”

That was because of the old regimented work environment. If you skipped breakfast, you wouldn’t have another opportunity to eat until noon lunchtime. And after that you couldn’t eat again until you got home after work, typically around 6.

It’s different when you can eat when you want.

One of the things I’ve learned is that when food is present, we tend to eat it because it’s available, not necessary because we’re hungry. Change out that bowl of chips and dip and substitute fresh veggies. There are lots of options that people can change to, but sometimes it takes effort.

When we moved into a world where you could push a button, and have warm/hot food very quickly, we didn’t help ourselves. The process of cooking a homemade meal from scratch takes more time, but you’ll feel better in your body once you slow down and enjoy what you’re doing.

Turn off the tv and put on some music that you like. Enjoy the prep work, then enjoy the cooking part, and then enjoy the meal you’ve prepared. When you do all that, you’ve turned on the pleasure sensors in your brain in a healthier way than quickly grabbing a bite that is overloaded with salt, sugar, and a bunch of preservatives.

When I added the clarifying word “wild” to my statement, I thinking of my cats. A couple of them are a little on the “big-boned” side (they’re girls, so I won’t use the “f” word).;-)

Portion size and exercise is the key.

Years ago, here on FR, there was a thread discussing obesity. Somebody posted a link to youtube videos of that high school dance program from fifty years ago called Soul Train. The kids on there were all skinny. Go to any high school or mall and look at today’s kids. You won’t see many of them who are that thin.

I think the author Michael Pollan had it right ... eat food (i.e. REAL food, not factory food), not too much, and mostly plant based.

That's not to say go vegan or vegetarian. It means moderation and treat meat as a side dish, not the main dish.

And MOVE. Get an iPod, download podcasts you like, and get outdoors and walk, move, jog, walk. Do something.

You don't have to be perfect on your diet or perfect on your exercise. Every little bit counts.

It's not that hard, folks, and you DO NOT want to be old and fat with old fat people's diseases and infirmities.
