In October, the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the gun industry’s trade association, reported that Americans owned 4.9 million silencers as of July 2024 according to data provided by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).1 Compared to previous reporting, this updated total reflects an alarming surge in silencer sales: In the first six months of 2024 alone, Americans purchased and registered a staggering 1.4 million silencers.
The data shows that between May 2021 and July 2024, a mere three-year span, Americans accumulated nearly as many silencers as were registered in the previous 87 years — since the National Firearms Act (NFA) first mandated their registration in 1934.

As the ATF notes, the NFA application process was initially designed to “curtail, if not prohibit, transactions in NFA firearms,” and the $200 tax stamp, which has never been increased or adjusted for inflation, “was considered quite severe and adequate to carry out Congress’ purpose to discourage or eliminate transactions in these firearms” in 1934.
In the past, silencer customers waited several months to have their NFA applications processed. But in December 2021, the ATF rolled out a new online “eForms” system — after successful lobbying by the NSSF — that dramatically sped up approvals. Well-known silencer retailers like the Silencer Shop have boasted that they’ve seen same-day approvals for customers.
As discussed here, silencer retailers have also streamlined the silencer-buying process. In addition to offering financing options for silencers, companies will prepare NFA applications for customers, collect their fingerprints through mailed kits or kiosks set up at gun shops, and even ship silencers directly to customers’ doors.

More good news: there is no sign that sales are slowing, and plenty of indications that they're only increasing. When it comes to suppressors, it's like AR 15's in 2004, selling over a million a year, every year, only it's a little bit faster.
Would not normally want to pollute FR with the propaganda from Everytown, but could not resist watching them wail in despair as people again assert their God-given rights.
Molon Labe!
Hopefully the Hearing Protection Rights Law will legalize all silencers to protect our hearing and avoiding neighbors ire.
They are not silencers they are suppressors.. only in the movies do they “silence”.
Have murders increased by 1.4 Million? I’m sure they have....
unnecessary /s/
To be fair, Hiram Maxim, who marketed the first commercially available suppressor called them “silencers” in his advertising materials. Doubtless just a little bit of marketing hype, but the name stuck.
All of us gun nerds of course like to point out that they really are better described (and are described in the NFA and GCA as “silencers” or “mufflers” — apt since Maxim used similar technology to automobile mufflers in his initial patent.
In any event, it’s very, very good that they are becoming mainstream.
Plus it’s fun to watch the gun grabbers lose their minds....
I WANT one!!! For target practice without disturbing our only close neighbors 700 feet away.
But then, I live in California. :-(
Suppressor, silencers, mufflers…..
It’s fun to quibble over the correct definition or proper term.
British often refer to what we call mufflers as silencers.
I consider them in practice interchangeable.
However, if you want to discuss the difference between clips and magazines….
I would love to have a .44 Magnum Lever Action with a suppressor for deer hunting. Unfortunately, I live in NY and that will never happen as long as the democrats have a strangle hold on the state.
Lurking assassins shooting with a “phoot!” sound. Dancing gangs with stabby switchblades. Sharks and Jets living together. Blood in the streets.
No bias there ...
