As justifiably alarmed as Democrats are by President-elect Donald Trump’s radical agenda and his nominations of unqualified candidates for Cabinet positions, these actions may be even more terrifying for Republican senators up for reelection in 2026. (What follows certainly applies to vulnerable GOP House members as well, although they, of course, play no role in confirming nominees.)
The 2026 map is somewhat more favorable to Democrats than it was in 2024. For example, the reelection campaigns of Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Thom Tillis of North Carolina will be two of the most hotly contested races. While they hail from comfortably red states, less rabid Republican Sens.Steve Daines of Montana, Mike Rounds of South Dakota and John Cornyn of Texas will also face the voters. That raises a host of questions. Will Collins, who said she was “shocked” at Matt Gaetz’s nomination for attorney general, wind up voting to confirm him or, worse, voting to adjourn the Senate to hide from her constitutional obligations? When it comes to mass immigrant roundups, will Cornyn lift a finger to prevent raids that snare hardworking Texans, disrupt businesses and break up families? Meanwhile, Daines, Rounds and other Republican senators from farming states will have to decide whether to remain mute when across-the-board tariffs drive up farm bankruptcies and destroy the rural economy.
In short, Republicans will face a dilemma time and again during the Trump presidency: Go along with the White House or stand up for their constituents. If they choose the latter, they certainly face the potential for a primary challenge from a MAGA Republican. Do they fear appearing too extreme to voters in the general election more than they fear such a challenge? If it’s the general electorate that worries them, they may choose to buck...

The J6 Quislings had to learn the hard way.
Some Republican Senators just need to be walked through how it was done...
Oh, I’m all for cowardly Republicans paying a price in November 2026. But I don’t think Rubin and I have the same definition of cowardly, or would pick the same Republicans who must “pay”.
I think those who refuse to support Trump after being elected or re-elected on his coat-tails are the ones who should pay a price. If they don’t support his nominations or if they vote against his agenda, they are going on every conservative’s “list”.
I prefer their whining to their cheerleading.
The Constituents and the White House are in agreement. It is the Senators who are out of touch. And you media people.
Jennifer RUBEin is definitely irrelevant at this point.
Yes, Jennifer. We are going to make those clowns who rubber stamped your Alt Left agenda the last 4 years pay for it.
The choice is stand up for their voters and confirm all of President Trump’s appointees OR face a primary challenge from a MAGA candidate many of their voters will support over them.
“I despise Cornyn. I hope he gets primary’d. Same with Collins.”
Cornyn and Collins are different. Cornyn is from a Republican state that would elect an actual Republican if we got rid of Cornyn.
Collins is probably the last R ever to be elected as a Senator in Maine. So she’s a net plus if she gives us a majority in the Senate. Her replacement will be MUCH MUCH worse.
Jennifer Rubin, yuck, when did she ever tell the truth. More BS from the sinking left.
Cornyn is worse than Turtle with his back door deals.
Collins is a follower not a leader.
The Alaska Kow needs to be removed ASAP
Jennifer, the only GOP senator who is remotely challenged is Collins. The Dems are equally as safe with only Osoff being vulnerable.
“I despise Cornyn. I hope he gets primary’d.”
As do I.
I suspect the democrats will “change parties” for the election and vote to keep him as the Republican senator.
They might then win in the general, since many Republicans won’t vote for Cornyn under any circumstance.
As the Babylon Bee said, “they don’t have enough experience being a worthless bureaucrat and might get something done.”
