A shift in the debate over fluoride. It occurred as trust in the nation’s public health system eroded during the Covid-19 pandemic. Reflects growing public concern over the toxins and substances that accumulate in our body, like microplastics and the “forever chemicals” known as PFAS.
For much of that time, the town of Yorktown, in Westchester County, drank unfluoridated water. By the time the new fluoridation system was up and running in August 2024, the town supervisor, Ed Lachterman, had detected a shift in public opinion.
He had grown accustomed to hearing from people who insisted that Yorktown’s water remain fluoridated. “It was, ‘fluoride, fluoride, fluoride,’” he recalled. But in the intervening years, his constituents seemed far more wary, voicing concerns about fluoridated water’s effect on the brain or framing it as an issue of autonomy — “my body, my choice,” he recalled.
A month after resuming fluoridation, Mr. Lachterman reversed course, suspending it in September. He cited an unexpected development: A federal judge in San Francisco had just concluded that fluoride, long known to be toxic at high levels, “poses an unreasonable risk of reduced I.Q. in children” even in amounts close to what is typically added to the nation’s drinking water. The judge ordered the Environmental Protection Agency to do something about it.
His ruling followed a report released in August by the National Toxicology Program, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, that concluded “with moderate confidence” that higher fluoride exposures “are consistently associated with lower I.Q. in children.”
The judicial ruling was a surprising development in the nation’s running debate over the virtues and perils of adding fluoride to our water supply, a controversy that over 80 years has veered across a lot of territory — from public health to conspiracy theories.

Many are surprised to learn that unlike the pharmaceutical grade fluoride in their toothpaste, the fluoride in their water is an untreated industrial waste product, one that contains trace elements of arsenic and lead. Without the phosphate industry’s effluent, water fluoridation would be prohibitively expensive. And without fluoridation, the phosphate industry would be stuck with an expensive waste disposal problem.
It’s a long article and very informative. I think I read that some bottled/spring water is fluoridated. People can call the company that bottles the water and find out.
Furries=school teachers/superintendents identifying as cats.
NYTimes is suddenly pro-poison.
Almost 6 decades ago my old chemistry professor warned about the hazards of fluoridation of drinking water. He too said it was unnecessary and carried unknown risks with long term ingestion.
Bottled water comes from public water... It is not from springs, pristine in the winderness. Fluoride is very difficult to filter out, it is easier to prevent its addition into municipal water systems.

A real pain to filter out. Reverse osmosis will do it. But it filters out everything. So that you must add some minerals. I see these mineral packages on Amazon. I just bought a home RO machine. Has not arrived yet.
My local Walmart and a few others. Have reverse osmosis machines. You bring your own container. Like a 5 gallon spring water bottle. About 34-50 cents a gallon
Even spring water and well water can have fluoride in it. It occurs naturally in soil and bedrock depending on the location. My well has trace amounts of arsenic. I feel fin….aaaaagh.
“Even spring water and well water can have fluoride in it.”
Some have Lithium .......
“Association between naturally occurring lithium in drinking water …
Naturally occurring lithium in drinking water may have the potential to reduce the risk of suicide and may possibly help in mood stabilisation, particularly in populations with relatively high …”
I did that for the longest time, purchasing water. I got tired of the cost, and got my own for home. Now I am tired of adding minerals too. Where I live the water comes from wells. I live in grasslands covered in rivers, and the water from the well is drinkable, but the City forced everyone onto city water, which they fluoridate, and chlorinate. I don’t mind that, I can filter chlorine, but fluoride is simply a poison. Kids have less cavities because govt covers dental for the poor.
Thanks..... What minerals were you adding?
Bone char filters will remove fluorides but don’t work as well for alkaline water. I have seen the charts on this.
I buy some stuff to add to my pitcher that holds the water from Amazon.

From RFK’s Telegram thread:
Thank you Lee Zeldin for joining me in Utah Monday. Utah has now become the first state in the nation to officially ban fluoride. I also celebrated other MAHA legislation in Arizona including removing harmful chemicals from school lunches and eliminating sugary sodas from SNAP waivers.
I look forward to inviting every Governor who passes MAHA legislation to come celebrate with me at the White House this fall.
Thanks... looks like Lee Zeldin is anti-fluoridation along with RFK Jr.
Yes, but the dispute goes back 60+ years.
