If there’s one thing to be learned from the Martini renaissance, it’s that everyone is looking for something different when they order the classic cocktail. There are shot-size Martinis and Martinis made by the bottle (or porrón), extra-dry regional takes and fashionably wet variations. Bartenders’ preferred gins for the drink are equally varied.

Vespers are yummy. They were my gateway to martini’s. Real martinis — those made with gin, vermouth, and a twist.

I’m not a fan of Vermouth. I like the clean taste of gin, vodka and Lillet Blanc or better yet, Cocchi Americano. I actually like it with 1/2 serving of Lillet / Cocchi because I find it too sweet otherwise. Also, it’s stiff.

My recipe varies. A gin with good botanicals. Lillet blanc. Often dirty. Here is an offering to the juniper gods. I had to cut down a 35-foot, 8" diameter juniper to make clearance to move a 40' container on my property. Stratosphere + Lillet in a stainless tumbler, sprig from the tree, with a berry muddled in.

I like a real martini with gin
But very dirty even some olive juice too
My vodka martini wifey even converted
One is enough
Martinis are not quite kamikazee or zombie level drink
But strong
I drink very little but love the taste and nuance of liquor and lagers
