Donald Trump selected U.S. Senator Marco Rubio to be his secretary of state, the New York Times reported on Monday, putting the Florida-born politician on track to be the first Latino to serve as America's top diplomat once the Republican president-elect takes office in January.
Rubio was arguably the most hawkish option on Trump's shortlist for secretary of state, and he has in years past advocated for a muscular foreign policy with respect to America's geopolitical foes, including China, Iran and Cuba.
Over the last several years he has softened some of his stances to align more closely with Trump's views. The president-elect accuses past U.S. presidents of leading America into costly and futile wars and has pushed for a more restrained foreign policy.
The new administration will confront a world more volatile and dangerous than it was when Trump took office in 2017, with wars raging in Ukraine and the Middle East and China aligning itself more closely with U.S. foes Russia and Iran.
The Ukraine crisis will be high on Rubio's agenda.
Rubio, 53, has said in recent interviews that Ukraine needs to seek a negotiated settlement with Russia rather than focus on regaining all territory that Russia has taken in the last decade. He was also one of 15 Republican senators to vote against a $95 billion military aid package for Ukraine, passed in April.

True, Trump has never made a bad appointment.
I trust Trump.
Oh, that is nice. Trump has probably asked him about a replacement.
No! No! No! I feel like that figure in the painting The Scream.
Now THERE is a good idea!
Same question I have. There has to be a place for him. He’s a warrior.
That’s the great thing about Presidential appointments....you serve at the pleasure of the POTUS.....if it turns out he is displeased.....you get the hook.
Pres. Elect Trump has a bad habit of talking crap about people he should view as allies. The biggest problem with this is that his more enthusiastic and less thoughtful supporters take it seriously ... and repeat it endlessly even after Mr. Trump has abandoned it.
🎯 Score another for the Donald ✔️
🎯 Give it up for the Donald ✔️
I think CIA is going to be Kash Pater (wrote government gangsters) maybe Ric as DNI over all the intelligence agencies. Whatever it is will be what Ric wants to do.
+1
Rex Tillerson? Bob Barr? Omarosa?
I hope he’s being a lot more selective and getting better advice this time than he did in Round One.
I’d rather hear what folk from FL think since they probably know him better than us outsiders. What do you think good choice? And will DeSantis pick a MAGA replacement for Rubio or an anti-Trumper since he himself is anti?
I hope he’s being a lot more selective and getting better advice this time than he did in Round One.
You don’t have to hope, he’s hitting it out of the park, so far.
Well, hoping for the best. Have to see how it goes I guess.
I think this is good for DeSantis as it frees him up to toss his hat into the ring for Rubio's seat. And he'd likely win it in a walk.
I don't see DeSantis getting a spot in Trump's administration. I don't really think he's a good fit and I think both men understand this. Yet, he turned Florida solid red and delivered it to Trump by 13 points so there should be some path for him to continue his political career.
Can DeSantis appoint himself? Doesn’t he only have one year left as governor? I dunno. I literally be him as governor, but terms limits and all. Maybe they will get creative?
I think DeSantis wants to be a Senator. I think he knows he’ll have a tough time beating out Vance in 2028.
We have a long way to go, and the rubber doesn’t hit the road for about three months.
I am very not trusting ... and that lack of trust has been thoroughly earned.
Auto correct! Argh! I’d love him (DeSantis) to remain governor, but term limits.
