Donald Trump selected U.S. Senator Marco Rubio to be his secretary of state, the New York Times reported on Monday, putting the Florida-born politician on track to be the first Latino to serve as America's top diplomat once the Republican president-elect takes office in January.
Rubio was arguably the most hawkish option on Trump's shortlist for secretary of state, and he has in years past advocated for a muscular foreign policy with respect to America's geopolitical foes, including China, Iran and Cuba.
Over the last several years he has softened some of his stances to align more closely with Trump's views. The president-elect accuses past U.S. presidents of leading America into costly and futile wars and has pushed for a more restrained foreign policy.
The new administration will confront a world more volatile and dangerous than it was when Trump took office in 2017, with wars raging in Ukraine and the Middle East and China aligning itself more closely with U.S. foes Russia and Iran.
The Ukraine crisis will be high on Rubio's agenda.
Rubio, 53, has said in recent interviews that Ukraine needs to seek a negotiated settlement with Russia rather than focus on regaining all territory that Russia has taken in the last decade. He was also one of 15 Republican senators to vote against a $95 billion military aid package for Ukraine, passed in April.

The other thing mentioned in the post you’re responding to was DeSantis picking Kari Lake, she doesn’t even live in Florida which means there is no way Kari Lake will be a Senator from Florida, we have plenty of good conservative candidates without bringing up someone who doesn’t even live here, unless I’m reading it wrong then I’ll apologize

This is my first thought DeSantis appoints himself to the seat that would be a solid move in strengthening the senate little Marco is useless!!!
I am thinking Grenell will be Sec. of Defence, I am mostly concerned about FBI, and DOJ! Those two departments need to be ripped up by the roots and started completely over!!!
We need a Secretary of State to gut the State Dept and fire almost everyone there.

Selecting Representatives and Senators to fill his administration is a mistake. It cuts into the GOPs thin majorities that he’ll need to get things done on the Hill.
And you think Trump was so smart with his picks the first time. How about the fact that Trump picked Christopher Wray and Bob Barr. How did that work out? And how about ACB? Believe me Trump always needs to be checked on his picks. It is probably his weakest point.

Another thought: Rubio speaking Spanish is a nice asset as Trump deals with Mexico, Central America, etc. causing us trouble.
Argentina with its new conservative leader needs to be cultivated too.

I’m good with this. Trump, unlike 2016 knows what he is doing. If he selected Rubio, it’s because he knows what Rubio can do and I trust Trump’s judgement. In 2016, this would have been a Deep State position. Every secretary will be chosen by Trump, marginalizing the Deep State.
Not my first, second, third, 4th,5th,nth or last choice.

One member of the FL House texted me this am and said “knowing how controlling Casey is, don’t be shocked if he appoints his own wife to the seat.”
Either way, neither of those picks will be pro Trump. You can guarantee that whoever DeSantis puts in the seat will serve as a nuisance to the Trump agenda.
Every Trump loyalist in the FL legislature knows it will be a nightmare”.
