Trump Taps US Senator Marco Rubio for Secretary of State

Donald Trump selected U.S. Senator Marco Rubio to be his secretary of state, the New York Times reported on Monday, putting the Florida-born politician on track to be the first Latino to serve as America's top diplomat once the Republican president-elect takes office in January.

Rubio was arguably the most hawkish option on Trump's shortlist for secretary of state, and he has in years past advocated for a muscular foreign policy with respect to America's geopolitical foes, including China, Iran and Cuba.

Over the last several years he has softened some of his stances to align more closely with Trump's views. The president-elect accuses past U.S. presidents of leading America into costly and futile wars and has pushed for a more restrained foreign policy.

The new administration will confront a world more volatile and dangerous than it was when Trump took office in 2017, with wars raging in Ukraine and the Middle East and China aligning itself more closely with U.S. foes Russia and Iran.

The Ukraine crisis will be high on Rubio's agenda.

Rubio, 53, has said in recent interviews that Ukraine needs to seek a negotiated settlement with Russia rather than focus on regaining all territory that Russia has taken in the last decade. He was also one of 15 Republican senators to vote against a $95 billion military aid package for Ukraine, passed in April.

I’m not totally against Rubio. I was starting to like him in the vp stakes. There are certain positions where you don’t need someone working against you and state is one of them. Grenell is core MAGA such a big portfolio to MAGA adjacent is a risk. Maybe at state it is ok but no such risks should be taken at AG

My rational thought on this matter is that I trust nobody in politics. Seen too much crap, over the years, even from politicians I was glad to vote for. Nobody’s perfect. Not even George Washington. (And no, I didn’t vote for him. Wasn’t old enough ... ) 😁

I agree, though: no reason for us to throw crap at each other. We’re on the same side. There are plenty of highly deserving targets over there on the left. Fire at will.

Rubio has been massively pro-amnesty. He’s also a neocon and Deep State defense contractor’s dream.

Grenell’s at least openly gay, so they don’t have as much against him—and to control him.

You mentioned Cuban families. No one here mentioned Cuba. Aren’t they ripe for their own Tianamen Square event? Rubio could shout it from the rooftop once he’s in office. Our attention and focus should be more towards Latin America as Europe becomes more fractured with muslims and their NATO commitments. Throw in Argentina with Milei and Brazil self defeating. We’ve waited 60+ years for Cuba to dump the communists and they get further behind every year. A Rubio appointment will raise eyebrows and make the communists feel like the Ayatollas do now.

Rubio is a Senator from Florida. He will be replaced with someone that DeSantis picks. DeSantis will likely appoint a strong conservative & also join the administration when his term is up.

Can we afford to lose a republican senator? WTF am I missing here? NO! Heck. I volunteer my services. I am a nobody with a small machine and fabrication shop. Keep Rubio in the senate!

Rubio is from Miami(Dade) which was flipped from D to R. He’s been all over the world several times that I know of, meeting with people in South America, the middle east, and eastern Pacific.

The only thing he’s been iffy on was immigration, as he doesn’t exactly have that kick your ass out mentality. This might be something to just get him out of the way.

It would be cool for DeSantis to nominate himself and put his lieutenant governor in the seat. She’s awesome. He’d be great as a senator.

I doubt the Democrats will waste much money on a challenger.

A week ago, I wondered what Kamala would do with her $Billion warchest. Now I know. 🤣

My SWAG is that Governor DeSantis will make a good decision as to his replacement.

No doubt, he already knows who it will be!

Good choice. I hope DeSantis will select Florida CFO Jimmy Patronis for the Senate seat. He’s done an excellent job.

Look for Miami Mayor Francis Suarez to be a strong candidate for Governor after DeSantis leaves in 2026
