October second-warmest, second-driest on record for U.S.: NOAA

October 2024 was both the second-warmest and second-driest October ever recorded in the U.S., according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The 48 contiguous U.S. states saw an average temperature of 59 degrees Fahrenheit in October, 4.9 degrees warmer than the 20th century average, according to NOAA. Only one previous October, 1963, was hotter in the 130 years of NOAA’s records.

Multiple states experienced their outright warmest October on record, including Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Utah, while California, Colorado, Montana and Wyoming all saw their second warmest. The month was among the 10 warmest Octobers for a total of 18 states.

The national average temperature for the first 10 months of the year, 58.3 degrees, was 3.3 degrees above the 20th century average, the second hottest first three quarters of the year on record. Eleven states experienced their warmest January-October period on record, and unlike the October average, they ranged far beyond the southwest region: Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

We didn’t get our fall or spring rains last season. We got it all at once this fall.

No complaints here in New England. Motorboat season lasted a couple of weeks longer, and with more golden opportunity days. Same for motorcycling.

Drawbacks: Could use more of those raw, rainy, contemplative days for harpsichord and reading.

Yup.
Think back to 65 million years ago when the large asteroid hit the earth in present day Mexico and wiped out the dinosaurs.
Temperatures were like hell then.

Parts of NJ haven’t had rain since early August. Less than a week after the election we got a decent rain last night. Things are getting better already.

Are you saying that NOAA does not have complete records for the last 4.5 billion years?

Well—they better get a bigger budget and get to work then!

Lol.

IMO, weather manipulation caused a lot of it. Chem trails were everywhere this summer. Extreme storms too.

Okay, for the month of October.

No first time since they started keeping weather records about 135 years ago in Dacula

Well, averages are made up of things like that.

I had a meteorology prof who admitted that this was very unscientific, and it likely is, but he always worried when we had (fill in the blank) weather than usual because it always averaged out and we’d get it eventually.

So yeah, it has been warmer and drier than usual. The warmer, I’ve been happy with. The drier, not so much. We need rain desperately. We are way behind here in NH and ponds, streams, and rivers are very low, down to puddles in some spots.

I’m praying for rain in moderate amounts. We don’t need to make it up all at once.
