A World War II soldier who was killed in the mountains of France during a German offensive in 1944 has been identified, and his remains will be reburied at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, military officials said this week.
Jeremiah P. Mahoney, 19, of Chicago, was killed on Jan. 17, 1945, in the Vosges Mountains of France during a weeks-long battle.
Mahoney had been assigned to the Army's Anti-Tank Company, 157th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, and his unit resupplied and reinforced the regiment during the fighting.

His death came just four months before Germany surrendered to the Allied forces in France in May 1945.
Mahoney’s remains were recovered in 1946 by the American Graves Registration Command, but they were unable to be identified at the time and were eventually buried at the Ardennes American Cemetery in Belgium in 1949.
May he RIP on US soil.
19 years old. It seems hard to believe a kid not quite into full adulthood can be sent out into bloody battle. Yet many of us, including me, did it.
I really think only the more mature men in their 20’s should be in the fighting.
If only I could buy him a beer...
RIP❤️❤️
“..It seems hard to believe a kid not quite into full adulthood can be sent out into bloody battle....”
Yep....sure seems crazy.
FWIW, my dad lied about his age and joined the USMC.
He was a 17 year old, snot-nosed kid that found himself in the 1st Marine Division (G, 2 ,7) as a BAR rifleman in one of the first waves to hit the beaches in the invasion of Okinawa. Wounded twice (both were non-life threatening, superficial wounds), and managed to survive to whole WWII ordeal to come home to the woman that would eventually became my mother.
I remember asking him on more than one ocassion why he lied about his age the way he did? He gave me the same answer every time: that he grew up in a large family that was dirt poor and never had a new pair of shoes to call his own....always just hand-me-downs. The recruiter offered him a brand-new pair of boots....he signed on.
Most of the men who stormed the beaches of Normandy were boys, less than 21 years old.
The sleazebags who denigrate the USA are not worthy to gather up the crumbs under their table.
Oh there are men, even 19 year old's who still have their masculinity but the number is a far cry from what America once produced.
...interesting....!! I had an uncle who grew up in dirt-poor Arkansas and said when he joined the Navy during WWII he got his first pair of good shoes...!!...he eventually ended up as one of the Navy’s first “frogmen” doing UDT (Underwater Demolition Team) missions....this was long before the SEALS came along.....RIP, “Uncle Chuck” and thanks for your service to our great country...

He left his “Safe Space”.
HOW MANY LIED ABOUT BEING EVEN OLD ENOUGH TO JOIN UP?????
The military definitely issues some great shoes. Almost 50 years later, I still have the low-quarter dress shoes issued to me by the United States Air Force. They're a little worn at the heels, but they still hold a great shine and I wear them to Mass every Sunday.
