In spite of the apprehensions of many persons that the election in this city would be attended with tumult and violence, it proved to be one of the most quiet and orderly elections ever held in New-York. The pretended fears of the Copperheads that there would be military interference with the freedom of the ballot turned out to be entirely groundless, and consequently their threats of a free election or a free fight, found no occasion for their execution.
The weather was such as in ordinary times would have been favorable to a light vote, but so great was the interest felt in this election that the vote was the largest ever polled in the city. A dense log hung over the city from early morning until late in the evening, but fortunately it was not accompanied by much rain, and, as the weather was mild, few voters were prevented from going to the polls.
The excellent arrangements of the Metropolitan Police, the strict enforcement of the law against liquor selling, and the fact that a competent military force was in readiness to promptly quell any disturbance, combined to secure the utmost quiet throughout the city. There was not even the ordinary drunkenness and rowdyism which attends the most unimportant elections in this city, and orderly citizens of all parties were no less surprised than gratified at the remarkable quiet and order that reigned throughout the city from the opening to the closing of the polls. The principal and almost the only excitement visible around the polls, appeared to grow out of the strife between the friends of rival candidates for local offices. This strife, in some districts, ran pretty high, but in no case resulted in anything which could be termed a row.

Johnson was a bad choice for Lincoln, who feared that he needed a soft-on-slavery VP to win.

“In the strong Democratic Wards, where the Inspectors of Election were composed wholly of Democrats, there was the most shameful disregard of law and the plainest requirements of the statute. Voters by scores, whose names were not on the registry, presented themselves at the ballot boxes, and notwithstanding the challenge of Union men, were allowed to cast their votes. It was only necessary for a man to proclaim himself for “Little MAC” to have his vote accepted without regard to his residence or qualifications for suffrage. Particularly was this the case in the Fourteenth, Seventeenth and First Wards. The Union men of the Fourteenth Ward, finding that no attention was paid to their challenges, and that they were powerless to prevent the wholesale frauds constantly committed, went to the United States District-Attorney..........”
The Copperheads (AKA RATs) lost so they threw a race riot in NYC. They ain’t changed a bit.
It’s reassuring to know that some things never change.
