When Vivian de Walque, a 37-year-old Reddit user, reached for a five-pack of Reese's peanut butter cups to ease her workday stress, she wasn't prepared for what would become a viral candy catastrophe.
"I figured it was a one-off, so I bite into the next one. Nope, no peanut butter. Well, there's no way I could get three in a row... right?" humorously recounting her quest through all five cups, each solid chocolate, "without a trace of peanut butter," she told Newsweek.
Sharing her experience on Reddit's "mildly interesting" sub, Vivian's story struck a chord with 100,000 upvotes.
De Walque, who works as an assistant director at tour operator Orbridge, was hoping for a momentary escape from her hectic work schedule and explained that she'd been working 11-hour days recently, "stress eating" to cope.
She'd picked up the pack during a shopping trip to Dollar Tree, where the Reese's five-pack sold for $1.25.
"Typically, I go for sour gummies at Dollar Tree, but they had this big Halloween candy set up... a five-pack of Reese's for $1.25? Sign me up," she recounted.

I guess that is 1250 calories mostly from fat and sugar.
An improvement would be a Big Mac and Large Fries and a McFlurry. Also about 1250.
I will not buy ANY food from any ‘Dollar’ store.
This doesn’t sound like a problem to me. :^)
Robotic automated assembly lines have those issues sometimes. Once cut into a fruitcake and found black stuff. Cut anther slice and hit metal. It was a machine nut plastered with grease that had fallen into the batter before it was baked.
Haha, I eat nothing in the dark because of her experience.
Actually I have had good luck with $1.25 candy packages. May go there today. But I certainly will check before biting into them.
THAT ERROR IS WHY THEY WERE AT DOLLAR TREE
There may be a perfectly logical explanation. Maybe the facility was run by DEI geniuses. Her candy came out all chocolate. Somewhere there is a package that is all peanut butter.
They always hush those things up. If word gets out, everybody will want maggots.
435 calories in five Reeses Peanut Butter Cups.
I take that back. That would be four of the little bars.
Is Hershey’s hinting they’re going to start marketing peanut butter?
Two or three! Wow, now that’s willpower.
They have all sizes but I think the big one I get is 180 calories, not 250 like I guessed.
Still a 600 calorie big mac would be pretty healthy, relatively speaking.
Someone who worked for a major chocolate company donated a case of candy bars (that we all know and love) to the church’s children’s Christmas party. The ones with nuts in them were filled with maggots. This was in the ‘70s.
Get some Adams Old Fashioned crunchy peanut butter, dip and smile.
Yikes! I hope it wasn’t the kids that discovered it! To this day I’m always a bit suspicious when initially biting into any chocolate candy bars.
“I hope it wasn’t the kids that discovered it!”
It was. 😲
