Gratitude often hides in the shadows of adversity. Most people thank their fathers for teaching them to fish or offering sage advice on love and life. My gratitude, however, stems from a different place—one that’s as dark and tumultuous as a South African thunderstorm. Yes, without my father, Errol Musk, I wouldn't have accumulated the veritable arsenal of inner demons that propelled me to the upper echelons of innovation and eccentricity.
Picture this: a young boy, eager to impress, met with criticism so sharp it could cut through steel. "Elon, you are weak and soft." But it wasn't just his brutal honesty that shaped me. Oh no, Errol had a knack for fostering resilience in the most unconventional ways.
Take, for instance, the relentless lectures about my perceived inadequacies. These weren't your garden-variety reprimands but epic monologues that would make a Shakespearean soliloquy seem like a nursery rhyme. Each critique was a masterclass in psychological endurance, fortifying my mental armor for the battles of Silicon Valley and beyond. When your self-worth is under constant siege, you develop an uncanny ability to bounce back from any setback.
Then there was the hands-on education in business ruthlessness. Errol’s ventures were a revolving door of risky gambles and dubious ethics. Observing his maneuvers was like watching a maestro conduct a symphony of chaos. Each failed venture, each ethically questionable decision, served as a cautionary tale, teaching me the value of calculated risk and the importance of, shall we say, maintaining a flexible moral compass.
My father's influence extended beyond the tangible. His complex personal life, replete with scandals and controversies, forced me to grow up fast. His questionable choices, including fathering a child with my stepsister, were daily reminders of the unpredictable, often unsettling paths life can take. These experiences, while terrible, instilled in me a sense of boundless curiosity and a penchant for defying societal norms.
So here’s to you, Dad. Thank you for the sleepless nights filled with existential dread, the constant barrage of doubt and disapproval, and the front-row seat to a masterclass in moral ambiguity. You truly equipped me with the fortitude to thrive in the cutthroat world of technological innovation. Without your unique brand of fatherly guidance, the world might never have known the joys of electric cars, reusable rockets, or the ambitious dream of colonizing Mars.
Is this really Elon Musk? Hard to tell.
It’s from a parody account.
Fraud. Elon hates his father.
I don’t know. It sounds in character, based on Isaacson’s biography of Musk. He despised his father, on many levels.. yes. But, he stayed in contact with him for a very long time. He overlooked a LOT before cutting him off.
I can believe he now sees the way that the hardness and chaos helped shape who he is.
