The entire police force of a small town in Oklahoma resigned on Thursday without explanation leaving the place in turmoil with locals demanding answers.
The mass resignation along with two city council members was announced in a Facebook post in which locals were told that an acting police chief would still remain to police the tiny town.
Geary, with a population of about 1,000, is now being covered by forces from neighboring Blaine and Canadian counties.
But the announcement has left locals puzzles with the original statement shedding little light on what was behind the mass walkout.
'To the Citizens of Geary. We regret to inform you, and we are sad to say that our entire Police Force resigned this morning at 10:00am,' Geary Public Information Officer Terryl Allen said in a statement.
'Considering this information, we were able to quickly secure an interim Chief of Police effective immediately, so the City of Geary is being taken care of without delay.'
Locals appeared baffled by the sudden resignation with little to be gained from reading Facebook comments.
'But why did they all resign?' asked one.
'I think an explanation as to what happened is what everyone wants. The entire towns police force just quit all at the same time and no explanation?' asked Robert Binswanger.

From the 1960’s to 80’s would have an occasional part time marshal. Law enforcement was mainly the game warden or a TX DPS dispatched from where ever…no sheriff.
No ambulance service until the mid eighties when my aunt and several other 50+ year old ladies volunteered for state sponsored EMT training and state provided ambulance.
When the required 911 phone service came in during the early 90’s, phone rang at the nursing home.
Quiet talk during holidays back then by the adults was of town bullies “leaving” suddenly.
Wise words but the real problem is always the city council.

the City hired an auditor to review the police dept. Instead of cooperating with the auditor the cops quit. If the cops did nothing wrong, why not cooperate?

Maybe the town can get some recompense suing you for slander, as you know nothing about this little town.
You’re the one that knows nothing. I grew up in a small town not too far from Geary. My dad was on the city council. I know of which I speak.
Self defunding the police.
Back in late 2019 or so, a small town in the Berkshire Hills in western MA, maybe a bit larger, had their entire force resign. It was a mostly centered on the town being usable to provide equipment. They had used Crown Vics, their one 4x4 vehicle was not worth repair, radios were outdated and had very poor coverage in many parts of town in addition to low pay.
In the end they merged with 2 or 3 smaller surrounding depts to combine resources to have better vehicles, staffing, training and joined a regional dispatch and radio system for better coverage.
A few small towns in a neighboring state did just that. It was a mostly centered on the town being usable to provide equipment. They had used Crown Vics, their one 4x4 vehicle was not worth repair, and they patrolled the “hilltowns” of western MA, radios were outdated and had very poor coverage in many parts of town in addition to low pay.
In the end they merged with 2 or 3 smaller surrounding depts to combine resources, keeping most of the officers and old command staff. Now they spread the cost out and buy one or two new cars every ~3 years, keep the ones just retired as spares, joined a regional dispatch center with a modern radio system and have consistent staffing. For example, the Sgts. stayed in the same position but it allowed them to have one on each shift, etc.

I’ve been urging this for my little town of 3,500. Our PD has time to spend chasing kids for screeching tires, vehicle unlocks, and barking dogs. I’d say that’s a case for defunding the cops.
That was my first thought too.
