GEN. GRANT’S ARMY: Particulars of the Movement Toward the Left; A Position on the Boydton Plank-Road Secured (10/30/1864)

WASHINGTON, Saturday, Oct. 29 -- 11:50 A.M.

Our special correspondent at the headquarters of the Fifth Corps, transmits the following to this Bureau:

NEAR HATCHER's RUN, Va., Friday, Oct. 28 -- 8 A.M.

The movement of this army on the Boydton Plank Road, and so on to the southside Railroad was partially successful, inasmuch as we gained possession of the Plank Road, and seized a portion of the enemy's works. The line as established was found too lengthy, and the Second Corps were withdrawn from the Plank Road, and brought up closer into line. As I wrote you hurriedly, yesterday morning, the three corps moved out of their retrenchments in three separate columns, the Second down the Vaghn Road some nine miles, in a southwesterly direction, then turning off to the right and northwest, until they struck the Telegraph Road, near Hatcher's Run. The Ninth passed out of their works, by a road leading out to the Hawks Farm, where they also found the Telegraph Road. The Fifth followed the Ninth, turning off to the left through a new military road, and finally brought up on the same road, and between the two corps named.

As soon as the Ninth deployed on the telegraph road sharp firing commenced, and continued for an hour, the corps, however, driving the enemy slowly before them, GRIFFIN's division, temporarily commanded by Gen. BARTLETT, struck the enemy's line as soon it they arrived, and also succeeded in driving the rebels, losing some sixteen wounded and killed, very few of the latter. The Second and Third Divisions were massed in the woods behind the First Division. The Second Corps found a picket along the Creek on Hatcher's Run, and captured some forty prisoners, among whom was a Major.
