ASTOUNDING FRAUDS! Arrest of New-York Voting Agents: Soldiers Proxies Forged by Gov. Seymour’s Appointees; FULL PARTICULARS OF THE RASCALITY (10/28/1864)

WASHINGTON, Thursday, Oct. 26.

Special Dispatch to the New-York Times.

Astounding discoveries have been made by the Government of intended frauds in regard to soldiers' votes; the grounds of the confidence of leading Democrats of being able to carry New York are now understood. A systematic and wide-spread conspiracy has been brought to light, carried on by agents here and at Baltimore, Harper's Ferry and in the Army of the Potomac, under the immediate supervision and direction of the leaders of the party in that State. Several of these agents have been arrested and are now in jail, and others will be arrested as fast as proof can be collected and proper provision can be made for their trial.

A military commission has already been ordered, and will meet to-morrow morning in Baltimore, under the Presidency of Gen. DOUBLEDAY. In the trial of two of the leading actors in this conspiracy who are known to have been in direct and constant communication with leading officials and members of the Democratic State Committee in New-York, the testimony in their cases, which I have seen and read, is full, direct and conclusive. It will leave not the slightest doubt that a gigantic conspiracy has been at work for months in maturing and executing a plan for defrauding the soldiers of their votes and for overwhelming the suffrage of citizens at home by the forged votes of thousands and tens of thousands of soldiers who have fallen in battle, or died in the hospitals, or who have never existed. In some cases sealed envelopes containing LINCOLN ballots have been opened and MCCLELLAN ballots have been substituted, but the main reliance of the conspirators has been on the forgery of signatures of pretended soldiers to papers, transmitting MCCLELLAN and SEYMOUR votes.

If anybody would be an expert in voter fraud, it would be The New York Times.

Not sure why you keep posting this garbage.

To,show that the extreme liberal gaslighting we face today was the same as it was even back then. I for one appreciate the look back to compare

What gaslighting? The Times learned about election fraud and reported the “full particulars of the rascality”.

I guess I read it wrong, I understood it to mean they accused people of fraud without evidence, like the left will do if they lose this election. The print is co ing up really small, and I rushed the article because of that- I guess i misunderstood.

The print is pretty blurry in some of the posted articles but some are readable. I tried going to the ny times, to see if I could read them there, but don’t have a subscription. Did they have actual evidence? Or just claims of evidence?

I get it.

The Times was a Republican, pro-Lincoln paper back then. So they were happy to report on Democratic corruption.

They are having trials already, so there must be evidence. The link to the article in the NY Times archives is on the post so you don’t have to read my jpg’s. If recommend a desktop or laptop for reading those.
