Like an increasing number of Americans, Marty and Melinda Rangers' busy careers made it difficult for them to start a family.
But after making a small fortune in the real estate business and retiring early, the couple moved to the Caribbean where they finally felt ready to bring new life into the world.
However, being in their early 40s and finding their new local medical services 'unreliable', they decided to forgo IVF and opt for surrogacy instead.
Marty and Melinda invested in 'hundreds of hours of research' in the process. But the dramatic moment when they caught their selected surrogate drinking alcohol turned their dreams of parenthood into a nightmare.
The couple settled on a newer but reputable surrogacy agency in California, who introduced them to a young woman who 'seemed reliable on paper and good to talk to over the phone.'
From there, both parties went through a psychological screening and the surrogate passed a medical check. Then the couple's embryo was transferred to the surrogate by an IVF clinic.
Marty said the surrogacy fees came in at around $100,000, with '$30,000 going to the agency, $65,000 going to the surrogate, and another $5,000 in legal fees.'
As part of the process, Marty and his wife had to sign a contract with their surrogate 'which was around 40 pages long with these agreements covering things you would never have thought of.'
Detailing some of the points in the contract, Marty revealed: 'Drugs and alcohol are strictly forbidden during the pregnancy, as is leaving the country. Domestic air travel is only possible with a doctor's letter.

Can’t have anything but a perfect baby.
Unfortunately, there is no such thing.
This is incredibly sick.
You know what they say about having children, “try and try again until you get one that you decide to keep”.
Very sick. So many levels.
Right off the bat. Nauseating. Absolutely nauseating. And these people live among us.
Busy schedules? Yet ivf was on the table?
So they just didn’t have time to f*ck?
This whole thing stinks.
“...Like an increasing number of Americans, Marty and Melinda Rangers’ busy careers made it difficult for them to start a family...”
Is it any wonder our country is going to hell in a handbasket.
Even if the baby was perfect, there is always puberty. That always messes up parents that strive for perfect children.
“’She was so happy for us and happy to meet the baby, but she also had the attachment of having raised the baby for nine months.”
I thought it was just a bunch of cells until ‘after’ it is born. What happened to that narrative? How does one “raise” a baby while still in the womb?
They made a surrogate have an abortion. Whatever happened to that “my body, my choice” mantra?
That’s right.
And downright satanic.
There is a reason that “super-wanted” children are more likely to be abused than “unwanted” ones.
The only way out of the mindset that steals, kills, and destroys in order to set up its own utopia is to realize that we live in a fallen world as fallen people, and there is a Redeemer who not only forgives us for the wrongs but also fills us with His love that gets us through whatever we face in life. People who don’t have that source of strength and confidence will always ending up warping their world and themselves.
$100K plus to buy a child that will most likely be raised by an Au Pair and a game console. There aren’t enough negatives to be said about this couple.
It really threw me.
Funny, coming from you, I wondered if it were from the opening scene in “Idiocracy”...:)
Well, gotta find humor somewhere!
While its not a good idea to smoke or drink during pregnancy, its not like one drop of alcohol and viola! the baby is guaranteed to have a massive birth defect or anything. Pregnant Women drank in the past before we understood the medical implications and still gave birth to healthy babies. They were 4 months in and all they’ve got is a possible maybe on her having drunk booze so they abort the baby? No tests of any kind on the baby or the mother. Just abort? These people seem nuts to me and they appear to expect a perfect baby. There is of course, no such thing.
the surrogate shoudla handed the couple a gun and said “Better yet, how about you leave the innocent baby alone and abort yourselves instead?”
Command-Z, undo.
