An infant was shot and killed by a toddler-aged sibling in an accidental shooting in the San Antonio Medical Center on Monday.
The incident occurred as four people were in a parked vehicle Monday afternoon in the parking lot of the Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Affairs Hospital.
"What we have here is a terrible, terrible tragedy that just occurred," Police Chief William McManus said during a news briefing.
Inside the car were a woman and three children, ages 3, 2, and an infant, aged 10-11 months old.
One of the two older children, whom are toddlers, got a hold of a "long gun" that was in the back of the vehicle, McManus said.
The child handling the gun accidentally pulled the trigger, striking the infant.
McManus said paramedics attempted to save the infant, but the infant died at the scene. The woman and children were there for an appointment, he said.
Police said the investigation is in the early stages and that no charges were being considered as of Monday afternoon.
Tragic.
Could be a very precocious 3 year old, I suppose...
Prayers for all involved.
I can’t imagine a 3 year old even managing to handle the gun much less accidentally pulling the trigger.
Something is fishy... A 3 year old handling a rifle? Just doesn’t sound plausible.
Cats and dogs have been known to shoot their owners. Especially cats when they get playful and start pawing things.
This one simple trick can prevent this from happening! Keep the chamber empty and nothing in the magazine either.
Of course this situation begs the question as to why a loaded firearm is in a car right where young children are too.
This is one day that mom will want back for the rest of her life.
I once loaned a .20 cal pellet rifle to a guy. He hid it from his very precocious 2 year old daughter, under the bed. He couldn’t find her, and went into the bedroom to look. A pellet slammed into the baseboard, not far from his foot, and he heard laughter under the bed. Why it was loaded and cocked, I couldn’t say....
“Who carries 3 babies and a “long gun” to the hospital? Tragic.”
You certainly live up to your name here with this posting and your comment. Proud to have you here!
Hard to believe a two year old girl could load and cock that rifle...
I headed up the 4H shooting program in my county.
Lots of 7-9 years old’s had problems properly holding even air rifle.
The idea of a 3 year old holding it and pointing it.
Seems strange.

I am sorry for the loss of life in this instance.
Mom will have to pop out another baby to make up for the one she lost and the benefits she was getting for having that child.
Note to self: Remove the loaded firearm from the child car seat.
At what later stage do the police (or DA) pull their Hotels out of their Alpha and consider charging someone with child endangerment?!?
She was a funny kid. Smarter than dad. She wasn’t very talkative at that age, but she was smart as a whip when it came to listening, and doing as she was told. Rare in a 2 year old. I remember a year or so later, he related that she was in the kitchen for breakfast, went over to the ‘fridge, opened it and said “Where’s my f***ing yogurt?” Mom looked at dad with that “Well, where’d she learn language like that?” look, and he said “Don’t look at me...I don’t eat yogurt.”
It does to me, too.
It is worse than strange. It is bullshit. It did not happen the way they said it did.
My Dad kept a loaded shot gun on the floor by the back door after I brought my then three year old over for a visit. I about had a heart attack. I told him to lock up his guns or that was the last time he’d see his grandson. He told me I should “train him better”. I reminded him he was only three and Dad said, “So?” We didn’t visit for a few years... until he locked up his guns.... Sheesh!
Yes, these people exist. And some are relatives who used to be smart.
Good point. Very possible some lying is going on.
