Zelensky says he told Trump Ukraine will pursue nuclear weapons if it can’t join NATO

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky said Thursday he has told former President Donald Trump that Kyiv will pursue nuclear weapons for defense if it doesn’t gain entry to NATO.

“In a conversation with Donald Trump, I told him it comes to this,” Zelensky said in Ukrainian while speaking to the European Council in Brussels.

“The outcome is either Ukraine will be a nuclear power — and that will be our protection — or we should have some kind of alliance. Other than NATO, today we don’t know of any effective alliances.”

Zelensky, 46, emphasized that Ukraine is choosing to pursue membership in the 32-nation Atlantic alliance as its priority.

“I believe that he heard me,” the Ukrainian leader said of Trump, 78.

“He said it was a fair argument.”

Zelensky noted that Ukraine had given up its nuclear arsenal voluntarily with the signing of the 1994 Budapest Memorandum in exchange for security guarantees from Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

“Who suffered out of these countries? Everyone? No. Only Ukraine,” he said in frustration. “Who gave up nuclear weapons? Everyone? No. Only one. Who? Ukraine.”

Prior to the Budapest Memorandum, Ukraine had the world’s third-largest nuclear stockpile on its soil following the breakup of the Soviet Union. It is one of four countries — along with Belarus, Kazakhstan and South Africa — to have voluntarily embraced nuclear disarmament.

1. If Ukraine joins NATO, that must mean NATO is obligated to defend Ukraine, and WW3 starts.

2. If Ukraine develops a nuclear weapon, that means they nuke Russia and Russia turns most of Ukraine into a molten glass lake, but all becomes quiet and the war is over.

I don’t like either choice, but I prefer 2 over 1.

Why does 1) mean WW3? If Uxakraine joins NATO, there's only a war if someone in NATO gets invaded. NATO doesn't let you in when you're actively in conflict, so the current special military operation won't apply.

threatening the use of nukes if not accepted into Nato is not the way to negotiate ‘position’ with Trump. Z’s egomania needs to be taken down a peg or three. He’s on the verge of out of control, like a 7-yo throwing himself down on the supermarket aisle floor because mommy won’t buy cocoa puffs.

What else can Ukraine do? If no one protects them, and Russia finally pauses attacking for a bit, how else would Ukraine be able to deter any future aggression?

It seems you are the one in error. Reasoning is not your strong point. You missed the point.

The nukes the Ukies had were designed and maintained by the Soviet regime, Russians, not Ukrainians. The Ukrainian s were/ are not capable of designing, producing or maintaining a nuclear program.

Your second error, be aware I have lived, worked and trained Russians in Moscow. Today’s Russia is not Soviet Russia. They have adopted Capitalism, exceed Western technology in many areas, and are a country to be respected. Putin is not a communist, but much like Trump, is a leaders who looks out for his people first.

Lastly, the Russian people and society do not support gay marriage, put Trans xyx’s in every .gov organization, allow men in woman’s bathrooms, put men in woman’s sports, mutilate children, nor export that filth worldwide.

The US has fallen, Russia has the moral high ground. Can I clear up anymore of your misconceptions?

What you say is correct under current NATO rules, but I didn’t see where Zelensky is asking for NATO membership at a future date. Why would he bother asking for something for the future, other than to guarantee that Russia will try to completely destroy Ukraine now, to prevent that future wish from coming true? I think he is or will be asking for immediate membership and direct military participation by NATO.

There is a big difference between talking about joining NATO and actually entering the formal joining process. I believe there a number of formal steps to make it happen. Putin was committed to provide protection until no longer needed. After formal NATO protection.
