Georgia nurse, 54, charged with using hand sanitizer to rob dementia patient

A nurse from Georgia allegedly stole jewelry from hospital patients she had been entrusted to take care of.

Stephanie Phillips-Siwiec, 54, is accused of stealing valuables on at least two occasions and, at one point, using hand sanitizer to forcefully remove the rings from the fingers of a dementia patient who only realized hours later.

Phillips-Siwiec faces charges of abuse, neglect or exploitation of the elderly, three counts of robbery and aggravated battery.

Charging documents seen by Fox 5 allege how the nurse was working the overnight shift at Wellstar North Fulton Medical Center north of Atlanta.

The theft took place between 1am and 9:30am when she took four rings off the fingers of Patricia Gaskins, an 87-year-old dementia patient.

The nurse was so forceful in her actions to remove the jewelry she is alleged to have dislocated the elderly woman's finger and cracked a bone in the process.

Police officers from Roswell in Fulton County were summoned to the hospital in August to deal with the theft after they were called by Gaskins' daughter.

She told them how her mother had been brought to the hospital at 1am after a fall. A 2am X-ray showed her wearing all of her rings.

It was only when she was brought back to the retirement home later in the day Gaskins noticed her precious rings were gone.

The rings - a yellow gold wedding band, a tennis racket-shaped yellow gold ring and gold wedding set consisting of two white gold bands, one with a diamond with a value of $5,800 - belonged to her and her late husband.

If you’re going to put you’re loved ones into a home and they have dementia/ alzheimers, remove all jewelery. They can wear fake obvious jewelry instead. It makes no sense for them to wear such expensive stuff at that point in their lives and you’ll put them in danger of situations like this.

My MIL’s diamond rings were stolen off her hands during the 12 hours before she died. An upscale assisted living place in SoCal. Also other fine jewelry in her room.

I’m a firm believer in a nanny cam when it comes to nursing homes, care homes and other such type places.

You can’t stop people from doing the stupid $*#@ that they do but your can sure kick their ass when they do it.

What a horrible skunk, stealing wedding bands and rings from an 87-year-old dementia patient. You can’t get much lower than that.

Great advice. My mom leaves out the fake gold filled jewelry in plain sight as a test and her care staff blatantly steals the cheap stuff too. They will steal anything to sell even fakes.

This wasn’t stolen at the nursing home, it was stolen at the hospital.

Yes. We thought of that too late. Imagine how black the heart must be of someone who would remove rings from a dying woman’s fingers. We think we know who did it (the Hospice girl), but could not prove it.

Police report was filed. They actually investigated by visiting pawn shops, etc., but nothing came of it. There was a small renters insurance payout, but the sentimental value was the issue.

Lots of “health care workers” take advantage of old folks.
We had a friend who was 92 when she passed - during the last 6 months she spent some times in the hospital - and then it was discovered her home “health care worker” had access to her home and used her credit card to rack up $30K - at a Dollar General of all places...she was caught and prosecuted.

One time when my precious auntie was in a home, I bought her a new dress and spent many hours altering it to fit her stooped body beautifully. Next time I visited, it was gone from her closet.
