Rosie ‘the Oldest Cat in the World’ Dies Aged 33

A much-loved moggy called Rosie, believed to be the oldest cat in the world, has died at the ripe old age of 33.

The tortoise-shell walked into the hallway of her home in Norwich, Norfolk, lay down and passed away, said her devoted owner Lila Brissett, 73.

Rosie was born in 1991 and turned 33 on June 1, which in cat years is an extraordinary 152.

Lila never got around to registering her pet as officially the oldest in the world, but the current Guinness World Records holder, a cat called Flossie from Kent, is a mere 28 years old.

Heartbroken Lila, who adopted Rosie when she was a kitten, said: ‘I miss her so much.

‘She wasn’t very well and one day she just walked into the hallway of the house, laid down and passed away.

‘There were lots of good memories though and I’m happy we had our time together.’

Rosie became an indoor cat in her later years and her favourite pastimes were eating and sleeping.

She was particularly fond of napping by a window in Lila’s ground-floor flat and was fed Purina One cat food daily or she’d ‘kick up a fuss’.

Lila adopted Rosie after a cat rescue service approached her to say the kitten needed rehoming as her first owners realised their daughter was allergic.

Rosie’s mum was a grey rag doll – which gave Rosie her bushy squirrel tail – and her dad is believed to have been a ginger tom.

Rosie, a fluffy tortoise-shell, passed away in the hallway of her home in Norwich, Norfolk this week with proud owner Lila Brissett, 73, by her side. Born in 1991, she was the unofficial holder of the title of 'world's oldest cat' as the current holder is a 28-year-old cat called Flossie from Kent - born in 1995. Rosie turned 33 on June 1 this year and died at the equivalent age of 152 in human years. Rosie on her 32nd birthday last year (Picture: Newsquest/SWNS) Speaking previously about her beloved pet, she said: ‘She’s quite a character.

‘Rosie sleeps by the window all day and, like clockwork, she will have some food and use the litter tray.

‘There’s no need for an alarm clock. All she does is eat, sleep, use the litter tray and repeat.

‘I often have to check if she’s still alive and breathing. I’m worried about the day she crosses over the rainbow bridge. She’ll leave a big void.

‘I’ll miss her when she goes. But I’ll never have her put down.’

A spokeswoman from Guinness World Records encouraged Lila to send in an application for Rosie for them to review last year – but she never got around to filling it in.

The oldest cat ever is Creme Puff of Austin, Texas, who was born on August 3, 1967 and lived until August 6, 2005 – 38 years and three days.

My cat Canoe died a few years ago at 21. Current cat Lilly is 19. Cats can live a long time.

Feral cats can only expect to live about 5 years. Well cared for house cats can live at least 20. We have one 13, one 14, and one indeterminate.

My cats lived to 15 or 16. They got kind of gross.

I cannot imagine how gross they could get at 33.

Our tortoiseshell cat Caldonia lived outdoors all her life—my allergist wouldn’t let her in—and she lived 20 years.

Lost one cat last year at 16. She was sick most of her life, and I swear she had 20 lives. The other one just bought the farm also at 16. Was never sick in all her days. She only got one life.

I got two strays a year apart in 2006 at Christmas. We lived in a new development in Pasco county.

Tiger was a short haired domestic and Lady was a calico.

Each died within one year of the other.

It’s rough, but we had 18 good years.

My cat CeCe will be 20 in 2025.

Lately, she has become a bit frail but
she is still eating well, drinking water, sitting in the sunny windows.
A small cognitive decline but otherwise still going strong.

Theres a lot to be said for experiencing unconditional love, too.

I dont like to think about that day whrn we have to say goodbye to each other.

Well, 152 divided by 9 is less than 17. It's not unusual for a cat to live to 17, so I guess that Rosie's nine lives ran consecutively.

My ex- had a cat that made it to 32 years, and another that made it to 29. So that ‘previous record, was not a real record.

“‘There’s no need for an alarm clock. All she does is eat, sleep, use the litter tray and repeat.”

Many humans have a similar routine and not just old ones.

Got two right now who aren’t long for the world.

Wife’s all upset, me too. We just do the best we can for them right now and if they have to go, well we gave them a good home.

This is the formula my vet used.
A cat is fully grown at 1 year and can have kittens.
so they consider the first year to be 16 people years.
The second year, a cat matures a great deal and it’s considered to be 8 more people years, so 24. After that, based on health issues that cats develop just like people, and the ages that cats die, they consider it 1 cat year = 4 people years. So based on this formula, 33 year old cat would be 148. So it’s close to their number.

I use a similar formula for cat and dog age equivalents, though I think three years per year might be a little closer than four for adult ages. Anyway, my post was basically a joke concerning cats’ proverbial nine lives.

Has this been gnawing at you for almost six months? Some sort of hobby might help.
