“When I was a kid we hardly ever bought meat, eggs or dairy products.”

I grew up in inner-city Milwaukeestan. We got our meat and eggs from my Uncle who had the very first ‘organically certified’ farm in our state. I worked for him (for free!) every summer growing up. He’s 92 and still feisty, as is his 88 year old wife! I learned so much from them!

Dairy we got from a local dairy. Everyone did. If we needed anything that Uncle didn’t provide, it was bought from the local butcher. We made our own sausages and brats with Grandma every year.

For fruit, you went to ‘The Fruit Boat’ which was always a blast! A real boat, docked on the Milwaukee River.

Best treat ever? You could go to Johnson’s Cookie Factory (they made Nabisco products) and for ONE DOLLAR you could get an entire paper sack filled to the top with broken cookies! They tasted better than the whole ones to us kids.

Life used to be a lot of fun back when we were ‘poor’ but didn’t even know it. ;)
