“Next time don’t order so much food,” he said dryly.
Those weren’t the words I expected to hear from my server at San Francisco’s buzzy Ko in the Mission District, but I quickly learned that if you plan to visit the all-you-can-eat restaurant during its $25 happy hour deal, be prepared for some unforeseen ground rules. Allow me to start from the beginning.
Ko first came onto my radar one evening as I idly scrolled through Instagram, only pausing when a video titled “$25 AYCE sushi + drinks” caught my eye. What followed was a montage of fresh salmon sashimi, tuna nigiri, chicken karaage and shrimp yakitori plates that seemed to cover every inch of the table. The restaurant’s interior was just as impressive, with a display of vibrant paper lanterns hovering over diners.

When the server appeared, I asked for a box to take home the remaining bits of food on my plate. Mind you, I know most all-you-can-eat restaurants have a strict no-takeout rule, but I figured asking couldn’t hurt. He told me I would be charged an extra $5 for every order I wanted to take home in a box. He explained that the $25 special was already such a great deal, that the extra fee was justified. Moments later, he reappeared at our table and asked if I still wanted a box, but I politely declined.
Up until then, our waiter had been friendly while exuding a quality of cool nonchalance. But my response was not met with compassion. He became dry and proceeded to scold me on the amount of food I ordered, adding that Ko had a big problem with food waste. He pointed toward Mission Street while explaining that many individuals didn’t have enough to eat.

This is why I call “Golden Corral” the Golden Pig Trough.
I go to a Chinese AYCE buffet with a friend a few times a month. I am very careful to put on my plate what I can eat. She, on the other hand, will have food leftover on her plate & go back for seconds & thirds..... almost always leaving food. I was brought where you didn’t waste food & stayed at the table until you were done.
I do think it’s rude & wasteful to get food and not be able to eat it. It’s also costing the restaurant.

If you want some incentive about losing weight, go to an all you can eat buffet, and look around.
Pianos.

Dirty place. Pro-tip: Always look at your plate when you take one. Make sure it’s clean.
Soy Boys
Some dirt/germs can't be seen with a quick inspection.
There is a Japanese/Asian buffet near me that is awesome. Everything is delivered to your table, no buffet line. They even have robots delivering your food from the kitchen.
It’s like $28 for lunch, but well worth it.
Yes they are this stupid and being a reporter bends the IQ down at least another 20pts.
That’s what makes them such a problematic generation.
Yes, unfortunately.
SF is a cess pool...
Well said.
