FORTRESS MONROE, Oct. 4, via BALTIMORE, Oct. 5.
The hospital steamer from the Point of Rocks has arrived here with wounded soldiers from the Army of the James. She reports that Gen. TERRY assaulted and carried a rebel battery on the Newmarket road.
HEADQUARTERS OF THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC, Tuesday, Oct. 4.
The utmost quiet has prevailed in front of Petersburgh since Sunday.
In passing over the ground where the Second Division of the Ninth Corps met with the reverse on Saturday, our dead were found entirely stripped of clothing, and two or three of the bodies were horribly mutilated. Several men had evidently been murdered after being wounded, and one body presented a spectacle too horrible even to describe.

HEADQUARTERS ARMY OF THE JAMES, SUNDAY NIGHT, Oct. 2 -- 10 P.M.
There have been no active operations on either side to-day nothing but a few spirts of loud-mouthed artillery, and an angry dash of picket-firing. I don't attribute the lull to a feeling of respect for the Christian Sabbath, but rather to the fact that neither side is ready, as yet, for aggression. On our part, there is no disposition to turn back, and an evident intention to keep every inch that we gain.
And what we have gained is worth preserving. The fort which the gallant Eighteenth Corps took on Thursday, at Chaffin's Farm, was the key to the outer cordon of defences around Richmond; hence the desperate attempt to retake it on Friday, when the rebels sacrificed at least 1,500 men in their two impetuous charges. Our own loss was less than 75.

That is most interesting. Thank you for the link. How do you embed the link in the post to have it live? I lost my ability to do that a long time ago. I don’t know if it is because I use the wrong browser or what.
