WASHINGTON, Sunday, Oct. 2.
The TIMES special correspondent at Gen. BUTLER's headquarters transmits to this office the following account of operations on the north side of the James:
HEADQUARTERS ARMY OF THE POTOMAC, Friday, Sept. 30.
The Army of the James is moving on to Richmond.
SHERIDAN's victorious veterans have their faces turned to the same object, and the Army of the Potomac is steadily moving further to the left beyond the Weldon road. These three movements are coincident and cooperative. A devout belief is general that the result will be the crowning victory of the war. The movement made yesterday by the Army of the James was intended to be an absolute surprise to the enemy, and so it proved.
The crossing of the James River was effected by means of pontoon bridges at Deep Bottom, and Varina or Aiken's Landing. Only by reference to a good map will it be seen that the advance at this time was altogether on a different line than that of the 29th and 30th of July, and the 15th of August, being made at Deep Bottom above Four Mile Creek, instead of below, as heretofore.
Moving noiselessly over the muffled pontoons, both corps had reached the north bank of the James before daylight. At 4 1/2 o'clock, the Eighteenth Corps, Gen. ORD, began its march out on the Varina road, and for a mile and more found the way entirely clear. Then skirmishing began, and our men were pushed forward rapidly, driving the rebel pickets before them, until they came to the first line of works at Chapin's farm, eleven miles from Richmond. STANNARD's Division of the Eighteenth Corps, was in advance. They formed in line of battle, and moved up steadily toward the work
