“I tell people that age is inevitable and they shouldn’t worry about it. It sneaks up slowly enough that we have time to adapt.”
That’s good advice. My wife and I are 73 and still quite active. She plays pickle ball five times a week and still skis in the winter. I hike a lot, more than my wife, and always get some good elevation work in. We hiked Mt. Kit Carson north of Spokane a couple days ago and did 6.5 miles, 1,450 foot climb, and the peak was at 5,500 feet. I’m still thrilled we can do those hikes. It does wonders to get outside, enjoy the wilderness, and get lots of fresh air and Vitamin D.
My hats off to you. I’m not a pickleball person but I do love hiking, swimming, kayaking, and such. And gardening, splitting wood, yard work, etc.
I love being outdoors. It makes me appreciate God and His Wonders. And I love having a great sturdy tent (our house) to protect me when I come indoors.
Truly blessed.
You’re an inspiration to me; I’m a few years younger, and have gotten really lazy in the last few years.
Forward and Up!
My uncle plays tennis and golf at 93.
I couldn’t play tennis now at 56 :)
That’s on me.
And he is NOT the norm, I know.
You folks suffering and/or battling other things like bills etc in older age, I am sorry.
I am shocked (not in a good way or bad) to see the changed attitude on FR regarding speeding up the end of life.
I’m not in (a lot) of pain so it’s still easy for me to say one should finish their life naturally.
EXCEPT that after my head injury 20 years ago, the head pain (not aches) was Agonizing beyond any human words and I Went to bed with a bottle of roxy’s in my hand in case I couldn’t take it anymore.
I took a tremendous number of xanax one night and it was a horrible experience but I lived.
And my pain got better over the next 5 years...NEVER that bad again and 99 percent of time now pain.
God showed mercy.
And I guess I almost went to Hell.
Or not. God decides.
And being in my early 40s, I had the right to keep fighting and seeing if it would stop.
If I was in a lot of pain in my 80s...I dont know what i would do.
I only judge in very obvious situations...like shooting someone during a store robbery.
Not wanting to end agonizing pain later in life.
I leave it to God to judge. He’s so much better at it!!
Good for you.
My dear friend hiked strenuously 5-10 miles every week. Played pickleball and walked every day. She had told people that when she went she wanted to go while asleep in bed, and she did exactly that on 9/11.
I guess being careful about exercise and diet is OK, but from friends and family I know, it doesn’t seem that it’s THAT important. Those who have been hyper focused and sanctimonious about that actually seem to have died earlier than others who have just lived their lives.
{Definite “no” to smoking and excess alcohol, though!)
