Tributes pour in for MLB legend Pete Rose after baseball's all-time hits leader passes away at age 83

In the wake of the death of all-time baseball great Pete Rose, tributes to one of the sport's most decorated and complicated players have begun pouring in.

Rose passed away in the early evening on Monday at the age of 83 at his home in Las Vegas. His cause of death is unknown.

Rose is known for many things. His 4,256 hits is the most of any player in the history of Major League Baseball and he was a cult hero in his home town of Cincinnati, the city where he played a majority of his career and where he managed for six seasons.

At the same time, his legacy is complicated by his actions off the field that - among other things - saw him receive a lifetime ban from the sport and get branded 'permanently ineligible' from the Baseball Hall of Fame.

While debate rages on about whether he deserved reinstatement or not, fans of the sport took the time to offer their thoughts and condolences at the loss of a sporting icon.

The Cincinnati Reds, the team that Rose was best known for in his playing days, changed their profile photo on Twitter to a black No. 14 and posted that they were 'heartbroken' to learn of the passing of arguably the greatest player in the franchise's history.

Barry Larkin, a former teammate and player for Rose on the Reds, tweeted, 'RIP Hit King Pete Rose'.

Former MLB slugger and two-time World Series winner Jose Canseco tweeted, 'RIP Pete Rose. Another player than [sic] should be in the HOF.'

Canadian sportswriter Hayley McGoldrick posted, 'just called my dad about pete rose passing like it was a family member, i think my dad loved that man more than he loves me.'

They "forgave" Mike Vicks and other athletes so they should have allowed Pete in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

RIP Pete Rose

Forgiveness cannot be counted on by man. God can guarantee, however.
Good to see you still here!

My mother-in-law lost her husband a week ago Thursday, and he was 78 I think.

She said he was getting ready for a doctor’s appointment at the VA that morning when he said he felt dizzy and started for the bedroom then he just dropped dead right there...............

“Mike Vick isn’t white , therefore ...”

There are a couple other major differences between the two:

Vick when asked if he provided funds for the betting operation admitted it. Rose lied about actually betting on teams and point spreads for years in some cases even using the clubhouse phones to do it.

I’m sure if he had fessed up about his gambling addiction, and been treated for it as a disease, it would have been handled differently. But he did violate the rule and extended the problem with the lies and the effort to cheat baseball with those lies.

Pete Rose's offense was to cross a red line -- gambling on baseball -- that is taken seriously by the owners because it would wreck the game unless ruthlessly suppressed and punished.

My brother was in Las Vegas about eight years ago and, for a hefty price, went into a stall in a casino mall and bought two copies of Rose's memoir, which Rose then autographed on the spot. With no one else in line, my brother got to speak pleasantly with Rose about baseball for twenty minutes or so. My brother thought that he got quite a bargain.

In fairness to Rose and other errant pro players, even though they are exceptional athletes, most are not very bright outside of baseball or self-aware about themselves until they are forced to become reflective by adversity. Fair or not, there was a hard lesson in Rose's disgrace, for him and for others.

Went to lots of ballgames in 1978. Saw Rose break the NL consecutive game hitting streak at Shea Stadium vs the Mets. A week or so earlier I saw him extend his hitting streak vs the Phillies by dropping down a bunt single in the 9th inning that Mike Schmidt couldn’t handle....

Now you are considered weird as a player if you don’t bet on sports and have 4-5 different betting apps on your phone and doing TV and ad commercials for them as well.

Mike Vick is on a football talk show. It’s the higher-ups at that network that think it’s ok. Al Sharpton is on MSNBC. Need I say more?

George Floyd was a waste of human skin-truth-it hurts.

The NFL has a different HOF standard; what happened on the field of play is all that matters. Peter Rose was a HOF player who disgraced himself as a manager. His HOF plaque should state that. Roger Clemens risked his freedom to deny steroid use, and a jury acquitted him. As things currently stand, MLB’s HOF is a joke.
