So much for the “private” in private college. These dictates are unconstitutional.
The current President of Stanford is a legacy.
He babbles about admitting “first generation from the central valley” which is a proxy for affirmative action to include Mexican illegal aliens.
Now that his admission has been deemed exclusionary, will he stay at Stahn-ford or resign and install an illiterate from Oaxaca to take his place?
You can be assured the donor stream will dry up.
“In California, everyone should be able to get ahead through merit, skill, and hard work,” Newsom said in a statement.
Does that mean Kent Dorfman wouldn’t be accepted as a pledge to Delta House?
When I first began learning conservative political philosophy many years ago, one of the key criteria pointed out by conservative thinkers is that conservatives believe in a broad range of many independent institutions in society, free of government control. Everything from local charities to independent schools to churches; even local governments are to derive their power from the grass roots rather than from higher levels of government under the principle that power only legitimately comes from the people.
By contrast leftists believe that a totalitarian central government is the solution to all problems; to the extent that other institutions are allowed to exist at all, they must be strictly subservient to the all-powerful central government. This dictate to private colleges is a perfect exxample of that mentality. And it explains why in leftist countries it is considered normal and reasonable to have "political officers" in churches, schools, and other institutions, to ensure they toe the central government line. From a conservative standpoint such controls are anathema and completely incompatible with the idea of a free society.
everyone should be able to get ahead through merit, skill, and hard work
MERIT?
SKILL?
HARD WORK?
"Wink, wink. Nudge, nudge. Say no more, eh?"
it does not specify any punishment for universities that violate it.
None of the above are criteria Newsom wants applied to admission. Race, gender, sexual orientation, political orientation, activism, "intersectional victimhood status", immigration status. Those are things Newsom cares about. Black tranny communist illegal alien felons move to the head of the line...
Make it your business to find and befriend an HR Professional, preferably at the director level. This will not be within your current employer or even in a similar industry. But once you do, the whole world becomes much more understandable. The days of hires, fires, promotions, being based on skills and competency are long, long, gone.
“In California, everyone should be able to get ahead through merit, skill, and hard work,”
What can you say…? WHAT HAVE THESE PEOPLE BEEN ADVOCATING FOR THE PAST SIXTY YEARS!!!??!!! Now it’s “merit”?!!! Wow. Just wow.
And private alumni donations dry up in 3...2...1.
“Merit” Since when did any democrat politician care about merit when it comes college admissions. If you’re a member of a protected group being admitted without meeting the minimal requirements is considered fair and equitable. If your parents/grandparents went to the school there or are big donors then it’s all about merit.
A law prohibiting this practice is simply wrong. If I run a business, can’t I give priority, or even a discount, to the families of repeat customers?
It’s fine for public universities — and maybe OK to make this a requirement for a private university to get public funds. (If you take public funds, there are always strings attached. Lie with dogs and you’ll wake up with fleas.) But for private universities — No!
Does private ownership mean anything any more?
This is the information-society version of seizing the means of production.
If this results in the drying up of huge donations, maybe tuitions will actually stabilize or lower. One can dream, right?
WATCH the enrollment PLUMMET
Supreme court action required. This is Unconstitutional.
