On Wednesday Hezbollah sent a ballistic missile into the biggest population centre in Israel - and millions of israelis heard the sound of that missile being intercepted above Tel Aviv.
The solitary missile would have been launched with the knowledge that it would most likely be shot down - if Hezbollah had sent a barrage of missiles designed to overwhelm defences, resulting in mass casualties, there would have been a devastating response from the Israeli military, says the BBC's Middle East bureau chief Jo Floto.
Still, the missile symbolises a significant escalation in the conflict, our correspondent says. Israel has said it is the first time ever a Hezbollah missile has reached Tel Aviv.
The Mossad intelligence base on the edge of the city has been targeted by Hezbollah before, with drones and less-precise rocket fire aimed at it in August. Yemen's Houthi rebels also directed a missile there earlier this month.

I’m expecting a significant war and then a “peace deal” is reached. But it’s unclear exactly how all of these events happen until they start to unfold.
Ezekiel 38 is still coming. The world needs to keep an eye on Iran, Turkey, Libya plus how Russia will react to Iran’s coming attack.

I think your correspondent is full of BS.
Good for Israel they intercepted the missile.
Let’s face folks just one missile.
Hezbollah may be holding back on big attacks don’t want to create any scenarios that help Netanyahu get stronger and Trump to win the election here.
Netanyahu is gaining strength in public opinion polls with the kind of attacks used on Hezbollah in the last week.
If he can bait Hezbollah into big military action then he gets to use more military force play tough guy.
Best outcome in politics Netanyahu gets stronger and Trump wins.
Hezbollah is certainly holding back and have not launched a full-scale attack on Israel, this typical of the fighting method of Hezbollah, Hamas, Iran and other Arab Countries.
Hezbollah as you say knows if they launched a full-scale ballistic missile attack on Tel Aviv they would get destroyed, they want to engage in a hit and run type of war to damage Israel by a thousand cuts and play the public relations battle hoping to get the US to withdraw support from Israel and to get the world to join their side in stopping the might Israel from attacking poor defenseless Hezbollah, a major missile attack on Israel would throw that strategy out of the door.
Escalation, maybe. Serious Damn Right!!
A single missile was guaranteed to be intercepted. The fact that it was intercepted above Tel Aviv is key.
This demonstration proved that Tel Aviv is within range. There was no need to actually hit the target.
The coalition war cabinet’s plan announced last october was a four phase plane.
1. eliminate hamas in gaza
2. keep the west bank under control and eliminate hamas factions there
3. afte gaza is under control, take on Hezbollah in lebanon to insure the northern security from attack like oct 7
4. stop iran from having a capability to nuke israel.
It was all over israeli tv, but not ours.
Undoubtedly. Expect a month of softening Lebanon up, then very quick attacks on locales, with no intent to govern or control territory. Just find the missile and infrastructure, eliminate resistance, then leave.
When do those muzzie missiles start carrying biological or chemical tips supplied by Iran? Things are getting out of hand and Heels Up is running the show. Stay in the graces of Our Lord.
Netanyahu isn’t “playing” a tough guy. He IS a tough guy.
That comes from a lion heart.
Trump’s is even bigger.
Hezbollah is flopping around, a chicken with it’s head chopped off.
Lacking central command, it is unknown hat the underlings will do to agressively go forward.
Nasrallah is hiding, mortally fearful.
Bibi’s brother Yoni was killed while rescuing hostages at Entebbe 47 years ago.
Bibi decided that the Palestinian hostage taking gambit must end. The way to end it is to kill all the hostage takers.
Bibi et al are doing just that.
Yes and No. Netanyahu is one SOB IMHO but he is our SOB not theirs. A Machiavelli if ever there was one.
I want to assume that Bibi and Trump are on the same team right now advancing the ball down the field to score in November.
After being beat up like this I like to think that Iran and Company are learning to operate more like adults.
Russia and China may be helping them to be more responsible in their responses to the provocations of Israel.
Of course, I still want Israel to win but some folks may misinterpret my analysis of this.
Trump the wheeler and dealer seems to me to be the man needed to solve this mess in a way that ends positively for Israel.
Don’t grab the tiger by the tail unless you can deal with the teeth.
