This battle took place about 50 years before Civilization collapsed. While Northern Germany is far away from the Mediterranean Sea they did travel hundreds of miles to fight here. Just a coincidence or related?

It was getting colder and drier for several decades prior and the effect would have been felt in the north before the Mediterranean area.
The Tollense area they were fighting over was a river valley that would have been slightly warmer and had a steady supply of water.
