Police detained the softball coach at the supermarket and found that $67 worth of items, including asparagus and ham, had not been scanned.

Oh, for the olden days when the checkout line went all the way into the grocery aisles as people waited to get checked out.
The self check-outs reduce the manpower needed somewhat but they also greatly speed up the process for busy customers. Safeguards are built in to prevent innocent people from being charged with anything.
Unless Indiana is a lot different than Nebraska, or unless this was a big store versus the smaller local store, having Walmart security stop a person for mis-scanning while they are still in the store is really, really rare, because the camera alerts the attendants to potential mis-scans and the shopper can’t continue until an attendant intervenes.
Note that she was not charged for shoplifting. And it seems that she was wrongly charged with marijuana possession, if the vapes she had truly contained no marijuana. It almost seems as if maybe a Walmart employee and the cops targeted this gal, because what happened to her is so different than the normal Walmart procedures.
Stupid headline.
Like the “Man gets life for broken headlight” ignoring that he had two dead hookers in his trunk
The surveillance videos make it clear whether it was a machine error, a human mistake, or deliberate human action. Walmart would never charge somebody for machine error.
Happened to me just last week
I completely forgot to scan the 3 cases of Coca-Cola that I had underneath my shopping cart and a bag of fried chicken.
Realizing my mistake.I went back to the store the next day and try to pay for it now
I bought another case of Coke.Scanned it four times and another order of fried chicken and scanned it twice
That wouldn’t have happened if I was at costco
Last time we went to a grocery store (not Aldi) I was loading bags back into the cart, and what USED to be called a bag boy just walked by me, gave me a quick glance and kept walking…..
Nonsense. Mis-scanning an item or maybe two but $67 worth is not a mistake.
The article is clearly trying to get sympathy for the thief.
It’s called ‘skip-scanning’....passing the item over the scanner where the bar code can’t read it and then tossing the item into a plastic bag. And, FYI, $67 buys a lot of ham and asparagus. Instead of the athlete/coach photo spread, Walmart should show the video of her scanning her cart.
This wouldn’t happen at Walmart unless the customer didn’t even try to bag the items he forgot to scan. He wouldn’t be able to continue until the attendant confirmed that the bagged item had been scanned. Walmart works very hard to protect customers.
The machine beeps when you get a successful scan.
That’s because they already have a credit card on file for S&G
Food King! Food King!
“Mine’s bigger.”
*** If an employee makes a mistake, nothing happens.***
This is BS. If a cashier’s drawer is off by more than a buck or two, the employee is written up, given retraining, and a warning.
When you are hard of hearing and there are 15 other in use self-checkout registers all beeping, everything is a successful scan.
$5.00 maybe but $67.00 is a lot of forgetting. 😏
I did that once. Walked to ace hardware. Put 2 packs of light bulbs in my tote bag. Looked at other things before walking down to grocery store. Started adding things to bag and noticed the light bulbs.
Checked out, walked back to ace, walked up to counter and said I accidentally walked out without paying for these. No problems except a weird look from cashier.
😂😂

One doesn’t lose job, reputation, over dismissed charges at the low level her job occupied .
It was probably the last straw for her college job.
That is true. But the screen also pops up a description and price of everything that is successfully scanned
