Legendary American rocker Freddie Salem has died at the age of 70.

The Outlaws guitarist passed away from 'complications due to cancer', his former band confirmed.

... Originally a drummer, Salem switched to the guitar at the age of 15.

The Akron, Ohio born performer was the only musician in his family but credited his love of music to hanging out around the jukebox in his father's bar.

Salem toured with the Rolling Stones at one point with the band, calling the experience 'incomparable'.

Is he the same Outlaws guitarist that was spewing liberal talking points in the 70’s and 80’s?

And the other lead guitarist, Hughie Thomasson passed away a few years ago.

The Outlaws were my first "sober" concert back in '93 - everything sounded so much better on caffeine versus alcohol and dope.

Being a liberal doesn’t make you a bad musician. It just makes you sadly mistaken. Art lives in its own sphere and lives forever.

The Outlaws down in Tampa town, it’s a mighty fine place to be.

They got green grass, and they got high tides, and sure looks good to me.

I am inclined to agree, esp w/the sentiment about art — and more especially about music, which even sets its own time and rhythm.

Musicians, being the media, aren’t as culpable for abusing music as a composer might be, if he abuses it.

that must have been the tampa of their day, cuz it’s not lookin’ too fine today.

I remember the day somewhat; around Skipper’s it seemed like eveyone knew someone who was related to someone in The Outlaws.

Interesting fellow. Liked this from the interview:
RTJ: When did you join the Chambers Brothers Band?

Freddie Salem: I joined the Chambers Brothers in Los Angeles in 1973 after an audition at S.I.R studios. I was 19 years old at the time. I recorded and toured with the Brothers for a year and a half. Great learning experience at a young age.
